MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Governor Mitt Romney, under fire for an adviser's remark that he has been "faking" his support of abortion rights, insisted yesterday that he would not back off his 2002 campaign pledge to uphold Massachusetts abortion laws, saying, "I take my promises very seriously."
The Republican governor and possible 2008 presidential contender was forced to deal with questions about his abortion position during a trip to this key primary state a day after his top political consultant, Michael Murphy, was quoted in the conservative National Review as saying that Romney has been "a prolife Mormon faking it as prochoice friendly."
"While I've said time and again that I oppose abortion, I've also indicated that I would not change in any way the abortion laws of Massachusetts, and I've honored my promises," Romney said during a press conference at the Radisson Center of New Hampshire before a scheduled speech to the New Hampshire Federation of Republican Women.
Romney also offered words of support for Murphy, who issued a statement of regret after the magazine quotation circulated among reporters and consultants the day earlier. "Mike Murphy and I chatted, and he clarified what he had meant to communicate," Romney said last night. "He's a great friend, and I accept his clarification."
Murphy, who declined to be interviewed yesterday, said Thursday that he was "discussing a characterization the governor's critics use" in saying Romney was "faking it." But a spokesman for National Review said yesterday that Murphy's comment was quoted accurately, fairly, and in the exact context it was presented.
"National Review is a respected magazine; John Miller is a respected journalist," said Jack Fowler, National Review's associate publisher, referring to the article's author, whom the magazine declined to make available for comment.

Does that mean that if Romney becomes President he would not sign any federal law that overrules Massachusetts' abortion laws?
It's hard to imagine ppl being SO selfish that they would allow abortion, but obviously we live in a world full of ME'S.

You guys don't get it...one of the most fundamental beliefs of the LDS Church is an individual's agency. Church members are taught doctrine until blue in the face, but ultimately it is an individual's righ to choose what to do and on Judgment Day there will be accountability for those choices.
Secondly, the LDS Church is very big on supporting the law of the land. For example, the Church is against war except when needed to defend home and family, but it never told members to dodge the draft in Viet Nam. Young men were told to obey the law and serve honorably.
Romney's position on abortion is no different. He is personally opposed to abortion, but, once again, it is the law of the land and individuals have the freedom to choose what to do. Furthermore, as governor he is hardly in any position to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Heck, if the people of MA, one of the most liberal states in the country, elected him as governor they must have liked him regardless of his religion.
So if an LDS member saw me charging at you waving an ax, he'd make no attempt to protect you?
Secondly, the LDS Church is very big on supporting the law of the land.
Which doesn't mean you can't advocate changing the law.
I don't accept that being a member of LDS prevents one from being meaningfully pro-life; and even if it did, I'd still be opposed to a person with Romney's position on abortion being the GOP presidential nominee.

Even if Roe were overturned probably fewer than 10-15 state would outlaw abortion

George Romney was a Rockefeller Republican and so is his son.
That would be a significant improvement ... one we won't get from President Romney.
