DES MOINES, IA - Rep. Steve King, R- Iowa, called Friday for deploying the military to seal the borders against illegal immigration, coupled with new financial penalties for companies that hire illegals.
"The destination of America is going to be shaped alot by immigration policy," said King, who said he will introduce legislation "in the next several weeks."

The bases are closing because we've reduced manpower levels massively since the end of the Cold War. Those troops are either going to other bases or getting "attritted" (released from service and not replaced).
Like I said, it's pretty obvious that Rep. King has not championed the cause he now suddenly has found religion over.

Steve King is the guy who pushed English only through in Iowa despite the screams of the Democrats and the media and the ACLU types. Took him several years, but he got it done. Forced a Dem governor to sign it, even. Vilsack had no choice...funny how that happens when more than 80% of the people want something.

So where's the massive increase in manpower for the Defense Department that he's proposed to make this possible?

Yes. I've been there and done that.
We couldn't secure South Vietnam's borders from terrorist infiltrators (hell, against entire regiments and divisions of the North Vietnamese Army) with 500,000 troops. And South Vietnam's borders were a LOT shorter than our own.

Your specious claim that we can't secure our border if we want to is ridiculous.
My point about minefields is that that is exactly what the American people will demand...forcefully...if and when terrorists penetrate our now virtually open southern border and commit a major terrorist act.
We have the technology now to spot every intruder, and pick them up with a mile or two of their entry point.
All we are lacking is the decisive leadership to make that happen.
A nation without borders is vulnerable to anything its enemies cares to throw at it.

Technology doesn't "pick them up." People do. And to cover over 2,000 miles of border, that means a LOT of people.

If the political will is there to close our open southern border, the appropriations and decisive action will follow, including the manpower.
Americans are more than capable of handling this problem, and the resources needed are not overwhelming.
Most of the time their grammer gives them away, they are either too concise or they tend to use the Current News as a way to talk, I.E. the Mr. Bush statement.
Wrong. Illegal aliens are "pushed" from their economies as much if not more than they are pulled by ours.
Equally amazing is how many of them aren't fit to be American citizens. Of course, neither are the pro-illegal alien loons.
Here's a little quiz I have found useful in outing the FOQNA loons who show up to act as flacks for the illegal aliens: "As Freepers, we believe in the rule of law. Loyal Americans insist on protecting American sovereignty, secure borders, and the preservation of American culture, customs, traditions and language. These are our values. Do you share these same values?"
The pro-illegals are always evasive and avoid answering the question, usually offering an attack instead of an answer. Very telling.

Representative King has, to date, offered only talk. Talk is cheap. Lots of people talk, including me and thee.
Getting things done is expensive. Let's see Representative King actually introduce legislation to add five divisions to the US Army without mortgaging the Army's future to pay for those divisions.
