Infinity launched the Jack format in New York City and Chicago today. WCBS-FM in New York City made the switch at 5 p.m. ET, kicking off the new programming with "Fight For Your Right (To Party)" by the Beastie Boys. In Chicago, WJMK-FM launched Jack at 4 p.m. CT.
The WCBS-FM Oldies format will continue to exist as an online radio station (www.wcbsfm.com). WJMK-FM will also transfer its Oldies format online at www.WJMK.com.
"New York deserves a radio station that is equally as eclectic as its listener's personalities and attitudes," said WCBS-FM VP/GM Chad Brown. "Jack-FM promises to be unlike anything currently heard in the market. Others have tried to imitate the Jack format, but time and again it has been proven that the success of the format is achieved by fully committing to its objectives and delivering a completely new and unique product. We look forward to changing the landscape of the New York radio market."

Guns N' Roses' "Paradise City," The Romantics' "Talking In Your Sleep," Rick James' "Superfreak," Barenaked Ladies' "One Week," A Flock Of Seagulls' "I Ran," and Robert Palmer's "Bad Case Of Loving You" are among the diverse song titles that will be featured on WJMK-FM. The station's new Web site can be found at www.iknowjack.com
"These are the songs that we all loved growing up, but haven't heard in years," said WJMK-FM VP/GM Dave Robbins. "But this station is about more than just the music - it's about being a true reflection of our great city's culture. We couldn't be more excited to debut Chicago's newest and most unique radio station."

Hope the legendary Dick Biondi finds a new gig, if he wants one. He's no kid. (As if I should talk).
Just another reason to switch to Serius or XM radio!
Ha! Or NOT to. Theyve had Jack for a while in LA/OC. I like it. Its sort-of a jukebox type deal with a minimum of interruptions. No, my uncle had XM with its Holly channel. 24/7 Christmas music. Enough to drive you insane. Jack is much better, IMO, and FREE better yet.
They just started the Jack format in Seattle, too. 96.5 Jack-FM, they call it. That particular frequency has seen 3 or 4 formats in the last 2 years, so hopefully this one will stick for a while.
I feel sorry for the children of today!
Yeah. With commercials. Stupid local jingles that clutter the mind for hours on end. No thanks. My $150 per year subscription to XM is money well spent.
I'm listening to WJMK, on the web since that's the only way it's offered and probably not for long. Heard the Outsiders, Temptations, Herman's Hermits, Manfred Mann and am in the "middle of 41 minutes of non-stop music." No DJs, just an occasional announcement or jingle of what we're listening to.
I never thought I'd see the day that CBS-FM was a non-oldies station. I figured they'd find a way to go on even after the last of their jocks died (and there weren't many left!).
Ha! I havent heard a commercial in 20 years. Not saying that they havent broadcast one, just that I cant *remember* one.
Jack does good
good background noise. Rack up the CDs and pop in a canned commercial occasionally. Ill not notice.
Jack sucks... Long time station in nashville, Oldies 96.3, WMAK, switched to become JACK about three weeks ago and when I callled the station's number, they answered, then put me on a hangup message line disguised as a listner comment line. THe parent company of (formerly) Oldies 96.3 fired the on-air personalities and switched to this lousy format, and this is a moment where I'm glad that other stations out there care for local listeners. SuperTalk 99.7 (flagship station of the Money Game) WTN's parent company, Cumulus Media, not only adopted the format, but brought aboard the on-air personalities (Coyote McCloud, Kathy Martindale, etc.), talked to Steve Gill for a half hour one day thanking the company for being good enough to adopt the orphaned listeners... Obviously its profitable enough or they wouldn't have bothered, but the fact that another company is unaccountable for their behavior and disses callers by putting them on a hangup line, really makes me sick, really makes me angry.
Unfathomable that NYC's CBS FM isn't an oldies station. I left NYC just in time.
The demographic that listens to that is no good for advertisers. It's sad - but it's Econ 101.
Hear hear! My sentiments exactly. Jack-FM doesn't know jack excrement about music.
I like to listen too music not "rip offs of classics that insight the listener to rape women or kill cops"!
Insight = Incite!
None of the airstaff knew about the change at CBS-FM until 4PM. I don't know when management found out. What a classy company CBS/Viacom is.I have heard that Dave Logan is no longer PD but Chad Brown is still GM. I'm also hearing they're going to stream an online version of the former CBS-FM over the Internet. No one has been officially fired but, obviously, there won't be any new contracts and none of the former staff will be on the air on 101.1.
BAD move by Infinity. They've got two other struggling NY stations. Why change this one given it still had decent billing? But, then, why does Infinity do any of the things it does.
Radio. This is when I'm glad I'm no longer in the business.
Long live Don and Mike!
