Actually F-18's, designated CF-18's by the Canadian Armed Forces.

At one time, they did make their own fighters. In the background, you can see an Avro CF-100 "Canuck." The plane in the foreground was the CF-102 Avro Arrow which was never built.

If you want to see a Canadian aircraft nut go crazy, ask them about the Avro Arrow. It was going to be the crown jewel of the Canadian aircraft industry, until it got axed. There are many up there who maintain that it was an eeeeeevil conspiracy by the US "military-industrial complex" that got it cut, because it was so much better than anything the US was building at the time--which isn't true, but it was a good plane, and a bit of a shame that it wasn't built.

So, as a result, the Canadian airplane industry became better known for building go-anywhere prop planes named after animals...Beavers, Otters, and Caribou. :)

You are confused. The CF-105 never went into full production. Six were built.

The C-102 was a passenger jet.

Actually that Avro WAS built, and at the time was the worlds first (and still the fastest) supersonic fighter. Unfortunately they were ordered dismantled and the program cancelled, because of political stupidity. Canada at the time had the chance to be the world leader in fighter aircraft design, and aircraft manufacturing but they blew it. The entire avro company was folded up. They also made many of the RCAF RAF aircraft during ww2, like the landcaster bomber.
Many of the engineers went on to work for NASA and Boeing.

There is one Avro hidden away in Alberta it is rumored.
there is a movie about it, but I can't remember the name of it offhand.

Actually, it WAS built AND flown. I believe they had 6 of them built. However, the Canadian government, in its infinite wisdom, cancelled the project.
