Americans will pick lettuce and fry fries and clean toilets and pave roads and milk cows.

Only if they paid $9.50 an hour with medical and dental benefits!

"Americans will pick lettuce and fry fries and clean toilets and pave roads and milk cows.

It's not just the jobs you listed above that illegals are being hired to do. They are working at the airports and ship yards in Mississippi, and those jobs pay more than minimum wage.

Only if they paid $9.50 an hour and medical and dental benefits."

Illegals may not be getting $9.50 an hour, but they do have medical and dental benefits and we are paying for them.

According to the University of California, the cost is about 22 cents to grow and harvest a head of lettuce. Of that, about 15 cents goes for farm labor. If we doubled the wages of farm workers, the cost of a head of lettuce would increase by 15 cents - even less if labor-saving machines are justified.

For labor costs to force lettuce to $5 per head, farmers would have to pay field workers $280 an hour. At that rate, it would be the kind of work "every American would want to do." The problem with illegal immigration is not that labor costs too much; it is that growers compete in a commodity market. If one grower can outdo another by using illegal labor, then his profits will increase. Inevitably, all growers must do the same thing to survive. As recent studies show, illegal immigration is driving down the wages of millions of Americans, while at the same time increasing their taxes

A little something for the economically illiterate.

Well.. then that's how much it costs to get those jobs done. Simple as that. That's the free market at work.

Not true, McDonalds pays about $6 (have no idea about benefits). In my area we have no significant illegal population, it's homemakers getting a few extra bucks and kids. You do NOT have to have illegals to make it work.

BS. Pure BS.

The illegals get paid under the table. That $7 hour paid to a Guatemalean day-laborer is untaxed. Legit citizens have problems taking that kind of pay -- they fear the wrath of the IRS, at the least.

If they took the job and paid tax on they'd be exposing their employeer to scrutiny! A double risk. The employeer doesn't want you working for him if you are going to report the income. He might even get a tad upset about it.

Say an employeer keeps both types -- some do. Disguises the books a bit. But after taxes Honest Joe American gets $5.50 an hour, and and after no taxes illegal Juan Guatelamalen gets $7. No so happy is Honest Joe. And some Juans laugh at him for making so pequeno.

And you deny the honest free-market, instead celebrating the thief's. You remind when I worked on the rental truck fleet of an Italian Bakery. A number of the drivers would come around offering to sell (1) dozens of pounds of meat (2) new stereo equipemnt in boxes (3) new furniture sets, right off the truck. The fruit of hijacks.

I never bought any, and told them not to keep offering the hot stuff to me.

Most, by far, Amercians do not want to work illegally.

Perhaps if you take away all that welfare and much of the disability cr@p and these folks get hungry enough those jobs may not look so bad.

It's a huge liberal myth that illegals work for $.12/hour. Just for the sake of research, stop by Home Depot or any place where they congregate and troll for Johns....erm...I mean employers, and ask how much to do a little work. Most will say $10/hr. They ain't cheap.

Nothing wrong with even poor U.S citizens wanting to work for an hourly wage commensurate with costs of living (albeit one in poverty)...but where did you come up with this arbitrary figure of $9.50, and the issue of benefits? do you have any documentable source, or did you simply pull a number out of your hat?
