Netanyahu says he now opposes disengagement [of Jews from Gaza]

Finance Minister Binyamin Netanyahu announced Thursday night that he would vote against disengagement when the government votes to authorize it. According to Netanyahu, he changed his mind after the heads of the security services warned that the Palestinians view the disengagement as a retreat rather than a choice, Israel Radio reported Friday.

Netanyahu said he saluted former IDF chief of staff Moshe Ya'alon and the heads of the security services who acted with courage and opposed the disengagement plan.

MK Amir Peretz criticized Netanyahu's statements on Friday and said he was only encouraging Hamas.

In a related matter, Vice Premier Shimon Peres advocated not destroying the Gaza hothouses after the evacuation so that thousands of Palestinian families could make a living from them. During Peres's meeting with PA Finance Minister Salaam Fayad Thursday, Peres also suggested the PA open the Gaza beaches to tourism.

What took Bibi so long to wake? It's good that he has, in any case.

He's right.

The Arabs would view this as a victory.

They need to be disabused of this notion.
