The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Threat Matrix - Daily Terrorism Threat
Threat Matrix: U.S. Terrorism
Expert: Al-Qaida Has Presence In South Florida
Full Story

MIRAMAR, Fla. -- Despite the massive federal, state and local law enforcement effort to stop terrorists from entering the United States, there is no strong evidence of how well it is working.

Many experts are concerned that there are plenty of terrorists or sympathizers already in the country who have been here for years. Some are even citizens.

The Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers were the first wave and now the increasing number of arrests seems to signal a second wave of terrorism in South Florida.

"Tainted-blood victim still feels left out"

By NICK GARDINER Staff Writer

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "SMITHS FALLS -- Still on the outside looking in.

That's how Tina Lyon feels even as the Canadian Red Cross awaits formal sentencing Thursday for distributing tainted blood that left her with hepatitis C after a blood transfusion in 1985.

The Red Cross was fined $5,000 after pleading guilty in Hamilton court May 30 to violating the Food and Drug Regulation Act."

I was surprised when Scott reminded me today that this was a holiday weekend.

He does not like to hear the ugly stuff that I deal with, he is still dealing with the loss of Theresa.

All I could tell him was that "all Freepers are working on keeping the folks safe".

He works in a casino at Laughlin and is an ex-fireman, so would be in the middle of it all.

Has anyone heard from Crabbe? She was to start treatment again last tuesday. Please add her to your prayer lists, as
last year it was a rough go for her.

"'It requires a bomb on American soil to awaken our citizens'"

Mary Mostert

June 18, 2005

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The title of this article, which was a comment in an e-mail from a reader I'm afraid,is true. We Americans are incredibly fortunate and unbelievably gullible. We have lived remarkably sheltered lives and most Americans alive today have never experienced or witnessed any real cruelty, much less actual torture. We have people, some of them in politics and the media, who actually believe that embarrassing men who have been arrested for terrorist acts is a form of "torture!"

Then, we have those such as Rep. John Conyers, Democrat from Michigan, trying to convince the American people and the world in general that the only really big problem and war criminal we have in the world that we need to get rid of is in none other than our own president - George W. Bush. They want to impeach him for liberating Iraq from a murderous butcher named Saddam Hussein. Of course, Conyers and his friends don't exactly phrase it that way. Their latest ploy is what they call the "Downing Street Memo" which is touted as a "secret" memo of a meeting of British government officials (no Americans) that Conyers claims "proves" President Bush "planned" to attack Iraq without cause. Only - there is not one single solitary quote in the memo of ANY comment by even the British that were supposed to be at the meeting and it doesn't even PRETEND to quote anything said by President Bush.

And, Conyers, of course, has a long history of using his position in Congress to defend people the FBI believed were tied to terrorist organizations such as Al Qaeda. His effort for the past two years to whip up support to impeach President Bush is based largely on the President's determination to put an end to the al-Qaeda network.

What this all seems to me to indicate is that we are watching the same kind of well planned disinformation campaign in the USA today that took place in the break-up of Yugoslavia when the media and President Clinton either through ignorance or deliberate action simply did not tell the American people the truth about what was going on. Clinton unilaterally raised the UN arms boycott in order allow Bosnian Muslims to receive weapons from Iran and Osama bin Laden."

"Venezuela seeks to build oil alliance"
SanLuisObisc ^ | Jun. 28, 2005 | IAN JAMES

Posted on 06/29/2005 3:45:47 AM PDT by Flavius

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "PUERTO LA CRUZ, Venezuela - With oil prices hitting record highs, Caribbean countries are looking with interest to a Venezuelan plan that promises to bring them oil sales on preferential terms.

Leaders from across the Caribbean will join Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Wednesday for talks on forming a new joint company, Petrocaribe, aimed at building a regional oil alliance and distributing fuel more cheaply.

Chavez says the initiative is about more than just bargain oil prices, and represents the "union of the Caribbean." Others call the "oil diplomacy," as Chavez seeks support for his political aims.

While many Caribbean islands stand to benefit economically, Venezuela will likely gain political capital by winning allies for its frequent disputes with the United States, said Bishnu Ragoonath, a political science professor at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad.

"Chavez is seeking regional support for his administration, and that is what he's getting in return for the cheaper fuel prices," Ragoonath said. "It's simply a matter of shoring up support."

Opponents of the Venezuelan president accuse him of pursuing his political aims by selling oil cheaply to his close ally Cuba and other Caribbean countries."

PROTESTANT TORTURED BY POLICE TRYING TO FORCE HIM TO RENOUNCE HIS CHRISTIAN FAITH

By Jeremy Reynalds
Special Correspondent for ASSIST News Service

TASHKENT, UZBEKISTAN (ANS) -- A member of a Pentecostal church in the Uzbekistan capital of Tashkent has been tortured in while in police custody since his June 14 arrest.

Uzbekistan is in Central Asia, north of Afghanistan (www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/uz.html).

According to Forum 18 News Service, sources said other church members have been “summoned and threatened.”

Forum 18 reported those sources told the news service that Kural Bekjanov,19, has been tortured both by police officers and cell mates in an attempt to pressure him to abandon his Christian faith. When his mother Gulya was finally allowed to see him at Tashkent city police station on June 26, he had lost weight, had difficulty walking and his fingers and legs were covered in blood.

“Yesterday police threatened to put him on a chair wired up to the electricity - believe me, all this is happening,” a church member told Forum 18.

The news service reported that Protestants have complained of a widespread crackdown affecting churches across Uzbekistan, except in Andijan, where an uprising against the government was brutally suppressed in May.

After being arrested at his Tashkent home, Bekjanov was taken to the city's Mirobad district police station. He was initially accused of involvement in the murder of a 65-year-old U.S. citizen of Korean origin, Kim Khen Pen Khin, who had worked with Pentecostal churches in Tashkent.

Her body was found in central Tashkent on June 11, Forum 18 reported. She had been assaulted and strangled. Although the accusations against Bekjanov of involvement in the murder were dropped two days after his arrest, church members told Forum 18 that when the police found out he was a Christian they started to beat him.

“His mother heard the cries of her own son and begged them to stop beating him," one church member told Forum 18. “They told her it wasn't her son's cries, but she said she knew the sound of her own son's voice.”

Bekjanov was then transferred to the main city police station where “the worst things of all began,” a church member told Forum 18.

He was put in a cell with alleged Wahhabis and Akramia members, who said they had been seized by police in Andijan in the wake of the suppression of the uprising in May (in other cases in Uzbekistan, police have planted informers in cells who pretend to be prisoners).

“These prisoners asked him if he was a Christian, and when he replied ‘Yes,’ they beat him brutally,” a church member told Forum 18. “Police officers saw this but made no effort to intervene.”

Sources told Forum 18 that police “brutally tortured” Bekjanov every night for the next 12 days, inserting needles under his finger nails (a form of torture reported by other former prisoners in Uzbekistan). His ribs were broken. “Every Christian in Tashkent was shocked when they found out that the aim of the torture was to get him to renounce his faith in Christ,” a source told Forum 18.

Bekjanov was not the only Full Gospel church member interrogated in the wake of the discovery of Kim Khen Pen Khin’s body, Forum 18 reported. Sources said the police were less interested in investigating the murder than in questioning church members about their beliefs.

“In the last two weeks, two church members were brutally beaten - one of them a pastor who is now recuperating after suffering concussion and seven other injuries, which were recorded at Tashkent's 16th hospital,” a church member told Forum 18. “In addition, 17 church members - among them four church workers - were questioned for maybe eight to 14 hours at a time. They were insulted, humiliated and threatened - police spoke to them in the way you would not even speak to animals. Each day it is getting worse and worse.”

Another church member told Forum 18 he had been summoned by an investigator named Murad in the early morning hours of June 17 to the 27th office of Mirobad police station. Murad beat him so hard that he fell over and cried out.

“He swore at me using all kinds of terrible expressions,” the church member told Forum 18. “He then ordered me to go down on my knees and bow down to him. When I refused, he beat me and kicked me in the stomach.”

The church member told Forum 18 he was finally freed at 7 p.m. He complained to the Tashkent city prosecutor and other agencies.

“Lieutenant-Colonel Davron from the 34th office of Mirobad police station told one of our people that all Christians are animals who have sold themselves to America and should be shot as this is a Muslim state,” another church member told Forum 18. “The investigator ... told
some of our female church members that he is fed up with these Christians, and they should all be locked up.”

Other Protestant sources told Forum 18 the widespread crackdown on Protestants began the day after the Andijan uprising was crushed. Presbyterian churches were closed down in Yangiyul and Angren, towns near Tashkent, as well as one in the small town of Farhad in Syrdarya region south of Tashkent, whose pastor spent a week in prison.

In Termez on the southern border with Afghanistan, police took the pastor to the police station where he was beaten and held in handcuffs. According to Forum 18, the entire congregation - including ten children aged six months to 14 years - were held by police for 24 hours in the place where the church met for services.

“They were given no food or water,” one Protestant told Forum 18. “Police then took the church members to the police station to see the detained pastor and warned them they too
would suffer the same treatment.”

Police also raided a Protestant church in the western town of Urgench during the Sunday worship service on 26 June, Protestant sources told Forum 18.

Some of the 60 church members present were detained briefly for questioning, while others were questioned in the church. The congregation - whose pastor was fired from his job in a factory several weeks ago - has been unsuccessfully attempting to register for the last two years, but local agencies which need to approve the application have refused to consider it. In the week before the raid, the pastor had discussed a new registration application with officials.

Protestants in Karakalpakstan (Qoraqalpoghiston), in north-west Uzbekistan, also reported renewed difficulties meeting. Four members of various churches outside the regional capital Nukus said they could no longer meet even in small groups in private homes.

Meanwhile the Emmanuel Protestant church in Nukus - which was stripped of its registration on June 4 (www.forum18.org/Archive.php?article_id=575) - is challenging the removal of registration through the courts. A hearing has been set for July 4. As this was the last registered Protestant church left in Karakalpakstan, Forum 18 reported that local Protestants believe this will be a crucial case.

Meanwhile, the trial of leading members of the Bethany Church in Tashkent has been set for July 7, Protestants told Forum 18.After the church's Sunday service was raided by police on June 12, six church members - including the pastor Nikolai Shevchenko - face administrative charges of breaking the country's religion law by leading an unregistered religious community (see www.forum18.org/Archive.php?article_id=588).
For an outline of the repression immediately following the Andijan uprising, see www.forum18.org/Archive.php?article_id=567 and www.forum18.org/Archive.php?article_id=585

"Children Sacrificed During Religious Rituals
Confidential Police Report Leaked to Media in UK"

by Jim Kouri, CPP

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "In a bizarre story appearing in the London-based newspaper The Independent, the Metropolitan Police reports that children are being trafficked from Africa and then abused -- even killed -- as part of sacrificial ceremonies in the UK. The confidential report, which was leaked to BBC Radio 4's Today program, also reveals that police officials suspect children are being beaten and even murdered because their parents and caregivers believe them to be possessed by evil spirits.

The secret report was ordered by Metro police in response to the death of eight-year-old girl, and over concerns about so-called faith crimes. The purpose of the highly confidential report was to "open a dialogue with Asian and African communities," according to The Independent news story

A social worker and lawyer commissioned by the police spent a year interviewing various community groups, and they compiled the report."

Four killed, eight injured in Kashmir clashes and explosion
(AFP)

SRINAGAR, India - A suspected Islamic militant and three policemen
were killed in a fierce gunbattle, while eight people were injured in
two attacks by rebels in restive Indian Kashmir, police said on
Wednesday.

The gunbattle erupted late Tuesday when troops and police
surrounded a house in southern Doda district where the militants were hiding, a
police spokesman said.

“Militants opened fire on troops who were closing in on them,”
the spokesman said, adding that police and troops returned fire.

“Two policemen who tried to storm the house in an attempt to kill
the militants were killed the moment they stepped into the house,” he
said.

“In the ensuing gunbattle one militant and another policeman died
and three houses were damaged.”

Two policemen and two civilians were injured in a grenade attack by
suspected rebels in the heart of the summer capital Srinagar on
Wednesday, a police spokesman said.

The attack on police was near the high-security federal
telecommunications headquarters and the main office of India’s ruling Congress
party.

Four soldiers were injured in an ambush by suspected militants late
Tuesday in the northern district of Kupwara, police said.

None of the one dozen rebel groups active in Kashmir has claimed
responsibility for the two attacks.

Violence has continued in Kashmir despite an 18-month-old dialogue
between India and Pakistan to resolve their disputes, including the
status of the divided Himalayan state of Kashmir.

The two nuclear-armed nations each hold the region in part but
claim it in full.

More than 44,000 people have been killed in Indian Kashmir since
the launch of an Islamic insurgency against Indian rule in 1989.

Separatists put the toll at between 80,000 and 100,000

****USS COLE COMING HOME TODAY!!!!!

FBI PLANS TERRORISM WATCH FOR THIS WEEKEND
http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/news/local/12010486.htm

The FBI plans to have agents on alert to respond to whatever might
occur in Philadelphia this weekend during the Live 8 concert and holiday
events.

John C. Eckenrode, special agent in charge of the FBI's Philadelphia
office, said the bureau had not received any "specific or credible
threats" related to Live 8 or other events.

Even so, he said, the FBI's local antiterrorism command post would be
on 24-hour duty in the coming days, and hundreds of Philadelphia-based
agents from a variety of agencies - experts in hazardous materials,
weapons of mass destruction, explosives - would be ready to "deploy at a
moment's notice."

Among other things, Eckenrode said, agents would monitor the arrival of
the USS Cole, a destroyer attacked by terrorists in Yemen in October
2000, which is scheduled to dock at Penn's Landing tomorrow.

U.S. helicopter down in Afghanistan
Taliban claims responsibility; 17 aboard helicopter

Wednesday, June 29, 2005; Posted: 5:59 a.m. EDT (09:59 GMT)

http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/asiapcf/06/29/afghan.crash/index.html

(CNN) -- The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the downing of a
U.S. military helicopter that crashed in a restive, rugged region along
the Afghan-Pakistani border.

The helicopter had 17 service members on board when it went down, a
military statement said.

A Taliban official called CNN's Pakistan bureau Tuesday, claiming the
ousted regime had downed the chopper.

The Taliban ruled Afghanistan from 1996 until late 2001 when it was
knocked out of power by a U.S.-led force.

"Initial reports indicate the crash may have been caused by hostile
fire," Tuesday's U.S. military statement said.

"The status of the service members is unknown at this time."

The U.S. troops were aboard an MH-47, a variant of the Army's
twin-rotor Chinook transport used by special operations troops.

Rescuers have surrounded the crash site in the Hindu Kush mountains
west of Asadabad, in the eastern part of the country, but have not seen
any bodies or recovered any injured.

The area west of Asadabad, near the Pakistan border, is known for
having snow-covered peaks rising as high as 7,000 feet (2,133 meters).

The craft "was transporting additional forces into an area in support
of U.S. forces currently conducting counter-terrorism operations," the
Coalition Press Information Center of the Combined Forces Command in
Kabul said in a written statement.

Army and Marine forces have been operating in the area.

"This is a tragic event for all of us, and our hearts and prayers go
out to the families, loved ones and service members still fighting in the
area," said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Greg Champion.

"Our courage and commitment to America's fight in the global war on
terror will not waver. This incident will only further our resolve to
defeat the enemies of peace."

U.S. forces have been moving in and out of eastern Afghanistan
continually, fighting insurgents they believe are crossing in from Pakistan.

In April, 16 people -- 13 U.S. troops and three military contractors --
were killed when a CH-47 Chinook crashed near Ghazni, 80 miles (128 km)
southwest of Kabul. It was returning to Bagram Air Base near the
capital.

Last week American fighter planes bombarded a southern Afghanistan
rebel hide-out with missiles and bombs, killing up to 76 insurgents in one
of the deadliest single clashes since the Taliban's ouster in 2001.

The increase in fighting has reinforced concerns that the Afghan war is
widening, rather than winding down. U.S. and Afghan officials warn
things could get worse ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for
September.

The officials have warned that foreign militants, backed up by networks
channeling them money and arms, had come into Afghanistan to try to
subvert the polls.

Fears have been further compounded by a spate of ambushes,
execution-style killings and kidnappings reminiscent Iraqi militants' tactics.

Afghan officials claim the infiltration of rebels from neighboring
Pakistan has contributed to the rise in violence, and have urged Islamabad
to crack down on militants there.

Pakistan vehemently denies there is any official sanctioning of the
infiltration.

On Sunday, Afghan intelligence agents scuttled a plot by three
Pakistanis to assassinate Zalmay Khalilzad, the departing U.S. ambassador.

As opposed to not being on terrorism watch, especially as something as memorial as this weekend? With the supposed asteroid they are intercepting and blowing up (just hmmm..) as if we aren't going to see enough fireworks, we are going to be lookign for lingering fragments of it for a few days after.

Ever since the story about them blowing up this asteroid on the 4th came out, i've had the WTF thought. I don't know if it's fodder to perhaps get the public's sensitivity down so that they maybe could expect something that night?

This is all pure speculation, the date doesn't click well with me.
