The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Threat Matrix - Daily Terrorism Threat
Threat Matrix: U.S. Terrorism
Expert: Al-Qaida Has Presence In South Florida
Full Story

MIRAMAR, Fla. -- Despite the massive federal, state and local law enforcement effort to stop terrorists from entering the United States, there is no strong evidence of how well it is working.

Many experts are concerned that there are plenty of terrorists or sympathizers already in the country who have been here for years. Some are even citizens.

The Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers were the first wave and now the increasing number of arrests seems to signal a second wave of terrorism in South Florida.

U.S., Iraqi Forces Complete Operation Spear Near Syrian Border

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, June 23, 2005 – Iraqi security forces and U.S. Marines and sailors with Regimental Combat Team 2 completed Operation Spear on June 22, concluding a five-day operation in and around the city of Karabilah, near Iraq's border with Syria, military officials in Baghdad reported today.
The operation rooted out terrorist strongholds, killing 47 and detaining one for questioning, officials said.

While patrolling through the small town along the border, Iraqi security forces and U.S. Marines discovered a terrorist torture house, with four hostages bound and gagged inside, officials reported. The hostages received medical attention for wounds they suffered at the hands of their captors.

The hostages said they were tortured and held for three weeks. According to media and others who spoke with the men, officials reported, they said they were neither interrogated by the terrorists nor told why they were being tortured.

The building where the hostages were held contained an improvised explosive device factory in the basement. This building was part of a compound containing a school with bomb-making instructions on the classroom's blackboard.

Three car bomb factories were discovered in separate locations by Iraqi soldiers and U.S. Marines in western Karabilah. A total of 17 car bombs were located, including a tractor-trailer, a dump truck and a van rigged with explosives, which were destroyed in place by a Marine tank unit. Large secondary explosions were observed coming from the explosive-laden vehicles. Iraqi forces and Marines also discovered small weapons caches with machine guns, mortar rounds and rockets.

There have been no signs or indications of any large-scale displacement of the citizens of Karabilah, officials said. Marines manning the checkpoints outside of the city, designed to capture fleeing terrorists, did not report large numbers of citizens leaving the city. "Gun-toting robot still in training"
Published: June 22, 2005, 11:25 AM PDT
By Michael Kanellos
Staff Writer, CNET News.com

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The U.S. Army has delayed deployment of a robot equipped with a machine gun, a slight setback in the march of robots into war.

The Talon Sword, an autonomous vehicle with a machine gun (or rocket launcher) mounted on top that soldiers can fire from a remote location, was supposed to be deployed in live situations in Iraq by April. The robot, however, required some adjustments, according to Bob Quinn, spokesman for the manufacturer Foster-Miller. The adjustments have been made, but the Army is currently conducting further testing.

"The system is undergoing a final safety release for combat operations by the Army," Quinn wrote in an e-mail. "They will appear in combat when they appear. More specific timelines will not be made public. The ability of a soldier to maneuver and fire his weapon remotely off a robotic vehicle is just a matter of time.""

"Robot guards for shops and offices"
Published: June 23, 2005, 9:34 AM PDT
By Reuters

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "TOKYO--Burglars beware, robot guards are here.

In an idea straight out of science fiction, robots could soon begin patrolling Japanese offices, shopping malls and banks to keep them safe from intruders. Equipped with a camera and sensors, the "Guardrobo D1," developed by Japanese security firm Sohgo Security Services Co., is designed to patrol along preprogrammed paths and keep an electronic eye out for signs of trouble.

The 109-cm tall robot will alert human guards via radio and by sending camera footage if it detects intruders, fires or even water leaks.

Such robots are vital from a business standpoint when considering Japan's aging population, Sohgo Security said."

Israel: Suicide bomber caught with explosives in her underwear

From the Irish Independent, with thanks to Jeffrey Imm.

A WOMAN on a suicide bombing mission was caught at an Israeli checkpoint with 20lbs of high explosives hidden in her underwear...
Security officials working at the Erez crossing, the main transit point between Israel and the Gaza Strip, said they became suspicious of al-Biss because her gait was strange.

Fearing she might be a suicide bomber, they isolated her and ordered her to strip. The images taken from a security camera showed her removing her black head scarf and gown. As she continued, the explosives were shown sewn into her underwear. It is possible she tried to detonate the device as she stripped only for the bomb to malfunction. Army sappers took away the device and blew it up safely.

Residents of Gaza are only allowed through the Erez checkpoint subject to strict rules. Al-Biss was being allowed through to receive treatment at an Israeli hospital after she was disfigured at her refugee camp home when a gas canister exploded on a fire while she was cooking.

Colonel Avi Levy, a senior Israeli army commander, said extremists were "cynically exploiting" Israel's humanitarian gesture.

During her television interview, which lasted more than an hour, al-Biss appeared confident and defiant but became shaky.

"My dream was to be a martyr. I believe in death," she began. But she became tearful and began to contradict herself. At one point she denied she wanted to carry out an attack. When she denied any involvement in a suicide bombing, her minders intervened.

It seems she meant to target the Israeli Beersheba hospital where she was to receive treatment for her burns.

for me it seems the lodi arrests are not close to putting my mind at ease. What was the last estimate we had of their #'s, think 20-30-40,000? A few people helps, but i don't think we should be comfortable with it.

They remain a cloud of mystery to me and like most of you im getting mentally exhausted thinking about the "what if's" there are simply too many variables in this puzzle facing a mirror, and we're blindfolded. (My feelings)

Take care everyone,

pez.

Wildfires Threaten Homes Across West

CAREFREE, Ariz. (AP) - About 300 firefighters battled a wildfire Thursday that threatened a neighborhood of multimillion-dollar houses near Phoenix. In California, firefighters gained ground against a blaze that burned several homes in the Mojave Desert.

The windblown Arizona blaze burned at least 30,000 acres and forced the evacuation of about 250 homes. Crews set backfires to remove brush from its path.

I am comfortable in that they are arresting these folk and to heck with PC. There is probably a great deal more that has occured behind the scenes that may never reach the surface due to the sensitivity of it. Such agressive actions by LEOs in themselves disrupt terror operations for fear of exposure.

Bethlehem handover next week

Bethlehem handover next week

Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz instructs IDF to start preparations for transfer of security control over West Bank town to Palestinian Authority; Qalqiliya expected to be transferred to Palestinian control a week later By Hanan Greenberg

TEL AVIV - Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz has instructed the IDF Thursday to prepare for the transfer of security control over the West Bank town of Bethlehem to the Palestinian Authority as early as next week.

During a meeting with senior security officials, Mofaz also said the army should be ready to hand over another West Bank town, Qalqiliya, in two weeks.

The latest decision comes during the most sensitive junction in the relative lull in violence that has prevailed in recent months, after the IDF intensified its counter-terrorism operations against the Islamic Jihad following a string of attacks on Israeli targets.

During Thursday’s session, Mofaz said IDF officers who maintain contacts with their Palestinian counterparts at all levels must continue to demand the PA confiscate the weapons of wanted terror suspects. Otherwise, the IDF would be forced to perform that task, the defense minister said.

The pledge to hand over Bethlehem was made by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in a talk with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas earlier this week.

Mofaz also said the IDF should prepare for the implementation of the apparent solution to the razing of evacuees homes in the Gaza Strip, with the Palestinians being tasked with the cleanup.

"Armed Men Set Afghan Girls' School on Fire"

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050623/ap_on_re_as/afghan_school_attack
By AMIR SHAH, Associated Press Writer Thu Jun 23, 1:41 PM ET

PADKHWAI RAGHANI, Afghanistan - ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Workers were stringing up plastic tarpaulins across the school's compound Thursday, and the principal said he plans to resume classes for his 665 students, ages 7 to 15, by Saturday.

Interior Ministry spokesman Latfullah Mashal blamed Taliban militants, saying the "burning of schools and education institutions is an agenda of the terrorists."

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "There has been a spate of attacks on girls' schools across Afghanistan since U.S.-led forces ousted the Taliban in 2001. The former regime prohibited girls from attending school as part of its widely criticized drive to establish what it considered a "pure" Islamic state.

Hundreds of thousands of girls have returned to school since the Taliban's ouster, but opposition remains in conservative areas of rural Afghanistan.

"Why did they only burn the girls' school? Why not the boys' school next door?" asked a 12-year-old student who only gave her first name, Farida. "The police must protect us. We want to be able to study."

The Taliban have recently stepped up attacks against government targets, particularly in the south and east of the country, where a joint Afghan government-U.S. coalition operation this past week to hunt down the Islamic militants has triggered some of the heaviest fighting since the hard-line movement was ousted."

Madison Hts. pair could lose daughter for delaying treatment for broken back; her brother faces charge."

By Mike Martindale / The Detroit News

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "MADISON HEIGHTS -- The Oakland County Prosecutor's Office on Thursday will attempt to permanently end the parental rights of a Madison Heights couple who police say neglected to seek medical help for their daughter after her older brother allegedly beat her over her relationship with a non-Muslim boy.

The 15-year-old girl, who is a Madison Heights Lamphere High junior, suffered a broken back in the beating, according to court documents. The trial to determine whether parental custody rights should be terminated is set for Thursday before Oakland Circuit Judge Joan Young.

The girl's brother, Ahmad Abdelmomen, 21, is charged with aggravated assault in the April 29 incident at their home in Madison Heights. Abdelmomen is free on bond pending a July 13 preliminary hearing before Madison Heights 43rd District Judge Robert J. Turner.

"She complained of the injury to her parents, but they didn't take her to a doctor because they condoned the punishment her brother gave her," said Robert Zivian, an assistant Oakland County prosecuting attorney assigned to the neglect case."
