While many MSM'ers (sorry, most) are lionizing this guy as "a hero," someone who "did what he had to do," something big is being missed.
Our side has pointed out that he authorized/engineered illegal breakins himself...
And that he turned on the Whitehouse because he didn't get the top FBI job. Now think about that....
Felt became a snitch because he didn't get something he wanted! He was an opportunist, plain and simple (and it runs in the family, apparently, as they shamelessly say they urged the old man to do it so they could all get some money). Yeah, a real hero.
But here's what I haven't seen....
If they had made him the head of the FBI, he WOULD NOT have turned on the Whitehouse.
In fact, as head of the FBI....
HE WOULD HAVE HELPED THEM BURY WATERGATE!
"Howlin, Expat, Mo1, MJY1288, kcvl and others did a great job contributing to your thread last night."
Damned straight. They brought it to life. Then made it grow up and be healthy.
"I think this will be one of the threads that we will be talking about for years."
Your lips to God's ears.
I may have begun to redeem myself a bit...I have cheesed off a lot of people, lately. Perhaps many will forgive my bare knuckling.
"Howlin, Expat, Mo1, MJY1288, kcvl and others did a great job contributing to your thread last night."
So did you.
If you don't cheese off people now and then on FR, then you just don't belong here!! :)
"If you don't cheese off people now and then on FR, then you just don't belong here!! :)"
Yeah, but my character flaw (just the one, mind you), is that I tend to fight dirty...I stray off-point to slap people for sloppy syntax, lazy thinking, too-low threshold for over-the-top emotional reactions to subjects.
But I'm praying on it. Praying that some people stop being so effing stupid!
Just kidding, on that last one.
Yes, surreptitiously taping those you pretend to befriend is ever so dignified.
"Yes, surreptitiously taping those you pretend to befriend is ever so dignified."
Please explain. Talking about Nixon taping in his office?
I never had a problem with that. He's the president.
But that's just MO.
Like I and many others have said, though, here and other places: Yes, he was a deeply flawed, deeply complex man. But we still see courage, vision and class in Nixon, for all his flaws.
Thanks.
I came in late and as an old grampa I faded fast.
What happened with Watergate has bugged me for decades.
Now we have the opportunity to revisit, learn about it without the MSM/Liberal spin and to weaken the Libs because of their love of Watergate/Woodward/The Post and hatred of Nixon and Republicans.
I have learned more about what I lived through in a few days versus most of my adult life thanks to the great Freepers on Free Republic. More will be coming as the liberals can't get this Genie back into their magical Watergate Lantern.
You asked some great questions last night.
Hoover had secret (blackmail ?) files on everyone and he wasn't afraid to let people know he had them. Felt as Hoover's protege would have continued the domination of Washington by the FBI. Nixon courageously slew that dragon at great personal cost to himself. If Nixon had given Felt the job we might be a police state by now.
And the problem with that is what? :-)
Grampa, must thank you for your observations and contributions also.
Isn't that the truth. My mind is churning. And kcvl's stuff is beginning to scare me. When she brought in Mary Jo Kopechne, I had to go to bed.......LOL.
Earlier this week, I read somewhere that Nixon sent L. Patrick Gray over to the FBI to ask for THOSE very files. They refused to let Gray see them and that's when the trouble started; shortly after that, Nixon appointed Gray to head the agency, thus setting Felt off. I suspect Nixon was going to clean up that place once and for all.
Outside Ben Bradley, Katie Graham, W&B, the Democrat Congress & their smarmy lawyers, I agree.
"Felt as Hoover's protege would have continued the domination of Washington by the FBI. Nixon courageously slew that dragon at great personal cost to himself. If Nixon had given Felt the job we might be a police state by now."
That's fascinating. And Hoover's FBI Files used to be more notorious than Hillary's FBI Files have become. But even though I have said many times that Nixon was a hero (albeit a flawed one), I'm not coming away from all this with your supposition that Nixon sacrificed himself to end the FBI's power. Not at all. I just don't see any configuration of dots connecting in that fashion. He would have to have gone through this thought process: I will be vilified, humiliated, likely prosecuted, convicted and imprisoned...and my legacy will be a joke of criminality
...yeah, bring down the FBI, who cares what it costs me and my family?
You're gonna have to make that case for me to buy it.
As for "If Nixon had given Felt the job we might be a police state by now"...that depends on what party has a man in the WH....
Waco, Ruby Ridge, Elian.....
"Praying that some people stop being so effing stupid!"
LOL Good luck on that one!!
I guess it has something to do with the Rosenbergs, the establishment of a Zionist state, and the Zionist movement in this country. He saw a contingent of Jews, evidently, as proZionist and as such possible security risks (as has been borne out recently).
I have cheesed off a lot of people, lately.
And the problem with that is what? :-)
Well, it depends. When I'm righteous and strong in my position and I'm making my points...nothing's wrong.
When I start enjoying it too much (being a cheeser-offer), then I'm losing focus.
(But damn! it's fun to tip people over the edge when they're wrong, isn't it?)
"You asked some great questions last night."
I'm simply grateful that those in the know are patient!
Mary Jo is what sent me to bed too. I slept on the couch with the TV on!
