Big Media's High-Water Mark [Deep Throat Revives Memories of the Liberals' Heyday]
Newsday ^ | June 2, 2005 | James P. Pinkerton

Posted on 06/02/2005 2:59:07 PM PDT by West Coast Conservative

For the major media, Watergate was the "good war," in which purely heroic reporters brought down the thoroughly villainous Richard Nixon.

So the belated revelation that W. Mark Felt was Deep Throat is being cheered by the press establishment - even if those cheers sound a bit like last gasps.

Not surprisingly, The Washington Post ran seven self-back-patting articles yesterday, including two on the front page. But others in the Old Media joined in, too: Felt-is-"Throat" led all three nightly broadcast news shows and filled up countless other news holes.

For the mostly liberal MSM - mainstream media - the Felt story is a chance to walk down happy-memory lane, to the halcyon days of the 1970s, before talk radio, cable news and the blogosphere. Yes, Nixon was president, but liberalism was nevertheless entrenched in the media and in Congress.

So when Watergate erupted in 1973, the press and the Democrats were ready. Their man, Archibald Cox, a top Justice Department official under John F. Kennedy, was brought in from Harvard to do in Nixon. And when Nixon fired Cox, he was forced to name yet another loyal Democrat, Leon Jaworski, to finish the job.

Let's make one thing perfectly clear: Nixon was a crook. His White House tapes prove that. But what was absent back then was any sense of perspective in which Nixon's sins were compared to those of other presidents. As an impressionable teen back then, I remember the chairman of the Watergate investigating committee, Sen. Sam Ervin (D-N.C.), declaring that the scandal was "the greatest tragedy this country has ever suffered, [worse than] the Civil War."

How many people are going to sit down and read all this old news? MSM is still irrelevant, no matter how many decades old stories they drag back into the limelight.

"Let's make one thing perfectly clear: Nixon was a crook. "

Not according to Jaworski, or so I read on another thread. And as I posted on another thread, consider this: the left and their confederates in the lamestream presstitution racket have lied about Nixon and Watergate for 30 years. Now, the story is at the forefront with the MSM no longer having its former power, indeed, being at an all time low in credibility. Conversely, New Media is very educative and growing in influence, telling the real story, or at least the other side. Coupled with so many Americans really knowing so little about Watergate and Nixon, methinks there's a whole lotta 'new' educatin' going on out there...

I have always wondered just what they were looking for?
The consequences of breaking into the oppositions campaign
offices must have been weighed before hand.
I don't buy the line that they were there to protect someone's whoreish wife.

Having to endure the pompous lectures of Sam Ervin and Lowell Weicker may have been the single most painful part of the whole Watergate scandal.

I'm with you. Liddy says it started with the prostitution ring being connected to the DNC and perhaps the CREEP wanted to deal a death blow to the 'Rat campaign. The saddest part is that I understand that Nixon was well underway to a big victory....

Nixon had already been elected for his second term.

The real tragedy is that the North Vietnamese flew under the media radar and raped the South. Nixon's claws were pulled and he did not have enough political clout to do anything about it.

I thought the break in was prior. In any event, you are right about Vietnam. But hey, to the left, the death of over a million innocents was worth taking Nixon out...

I just found the handiest "Deep Throat" thread to post that Leslie Stahl is on Hardball telling how she was dating Bob Woodward during those days.

She knew there was a guy in a parking garage so said when in later years people doubted that detail she knew it was true.

She was with CBS even back then.

Lesle whines that Al Haig wrote her a nasty letter when she spoke about her suspicions. Even Chris Matthews points out that since it wasn't him he would be rightly annoyed at being called a traitor. Leslie demurs that she doesn't consider it and act of treachery and Chris agrees.

Leslie Stahl on Hardball points out that Bob Woodward referenced in his column today a book Mark Felt wrote years ago. A little noticed book (she didn't give the name).

In it Felt evidently conveyed the sense that he considered the Nixon administration to be like Nazis and Leslie agrees with this.

So did Chris Matthews.

The break in was June '72, as I recall. (I was visiting my aunt and uncle in So. Calif. when the break-in occurred, so it pre-dated the election.)

No surprise with Stahl and Matthews. As to Felt, this bolsters the take out Nixon motives. Misguided, delusional patriotism of some sort...

Thanks. Though only 12 at the time, I remember the CREEP acronym well, hence my recollection...

"CREEP"...a rather unfortunately acronym for the Committee to RE-Elect the President. (It actually should have been CREP, but that's the media for you.)

Yep. The good news is now, in the minds of so many more in the body politic, the presstitutes are the dishonest creeps today. Hehehehe...

Mark Felt's book, "FBI Pyramid: From the Inside" has sold out on half.com. I'm willing to bet that at this time last week there were dozens of copies available for $1.

And in 6 months there will again be dozens of copies on half.com for $1.

And this

you just have to laugh at.

The name of W. Mark Felt's book is THE FBI PYRAMID FROM THE INSIDE. I looked it up at Amazon.com and interestingly, there have been 3 reviews of it since yesterday's revelation.

Thanks for the info on the book.

What an auction. LOL

Isn't that too cute about Leslie and Bob?

Just had to find a handy spot to post my real-time notes as she gurgled out that tidbit which seemed to take Chris by surprise.

(disclaimer: breaking Hardball boycott only because of his coverage of the Felt revelation which I am highly interested in)
