Continuing violence during the past days has claimed the lives of at least four children, two US soldiers and a Sunni Muslim cleric, underscoring the rampant, random nature of an insurgency that has killed at least 810 people since the April 28 announcement of Iraq’s new Shiite-led government.

...

A new online posting purportedly by the al Qaida group in Iraq has declared the creation of a new cell of suicide bombers called the “al-Bara bin Malek Brigade,” and claimed it has already carried out a number of unspecified attacks. Among those detained includes the suspected leader of the terror group, the National Islamic Resistance/1920 Revolution Brigade, Badir said.

Badir did not reveal the detainee’s name, only referring to him as the “Prince of Abu Ghraib,” a western Baghdad district where the group has conducted multiple attacks. The group leader was captured during the Iraqi-led Operation Lightning.

Iraqi police have also arrested the brother of an at-large member of the 55 most wanted list of former Saddam Hussein regime figures.

Anwar Abdel Karim Abdallah al-Sadun was captured with three other Baathists near Nasiriyah. He is the brother of Abdel Baqi Abdel Karim Abdallah al-Sadun, the former Baath Party regional command chairman and No 40 on the most want

Remember the Marine(Hassoon) who was held "hostage" then turned up in Lebanon and returned to the states...then deserted again.

This is the same group who "held him"

National Islamic Resistance/1920 Revolution Brigade

I would suppose that "Homicide bomber cells" would need to be re-created periodicaly....

Nice bit of background info there.

Results from Operation Lightning (Thunder) have been scarcely reported.

I also remember its previous leader was captured months ago too. Well, nothing is surprising for its group to survive with another leader in charge.

Thunder is a different operation..its the roadblocks and checkpoints the public face. Lightening is a snatch and grab operation designed to roll up the leadership.... being done quite covertly.

Yeah, that's what I understand from reading Wretchard's early posting on it. At that time a few people questioned whether there are really two operations running simultaneously, or whether it is a translation ambiguity. Chester was one who questioned the interpretation, and I've not seen any follow up on the question.

Not sure it matters. Those involved know what's going on and those of us observing from afar don't really have a need to know.

Chester promised an analysis when more info was available, but there has been a dearth of open source information.

True, but its scary, isnt it? That there are so many fanatics willing to blow up themselves and as many innocent civilians as possible. It seems there is no end to their number. Plus a guy driving and explosives-laden vehicle into a crowd of people is almost impossible to defend against. One has to appreciate the enormous task the coalition and Iraqi forces have.

Ain't it a drag? And they have to print up new tee shirts too! And--- the Cradle of Civilization doesn't even make them anymore----they buy 'em from the Chicomz! Does Al Q have a plan to keep Iraqi jobs at home?

I guess in Liberal Land the word "terrorist" must always end up in quotes. That way, they can practice diversity and inclusion and aid and abet the enemies of America.
