Freeper research wanted: Can we estimate Felt's FBI pension? Is he being abused by his daughter?
one man's opinion

Posted on 06/02/2005 11:18:04 AM PDT by ken5050

Much has been written about the need and desire of Felt's family to cash in on his 15 minutes of fame. I have no problem with this, but we're also hearing about how he is living in a converted garage at his daughter's house, and that she has taken care of him for 20 years. Before designating her for sainthood. I 'd like to point out that he has been receiving a federal pension all this time, and he retired at the top of the federal pay system I know very little about the federal system, but assume there are many here who can estimate what his salary was at the time he retired, and what his pension is, even assuming that he elected a reduced benefit option to provide a survivor benefitfor his wife.

...doesn't make him a hero. He isn't...

Using hero in this kind of context is merely in the eyes of the beholder. Did you think Linda Tripp is a hero?

Context? Eyes of the beholder? Your relativist response is meaningless.

Felt was a law breaker. Tripp was not. Felt was not a hero because he was a law breaker. Tripp was a hero at the very least when she testified before the grand jury about travel gate and about Clinton's sexual advances toward Kathleen Willey.

Do you disagree with that?

That would make sense if there weren't two reporters waiting for your father to die before they let the world know the truth. In this way he at least has a little control over how he'll be characterized by this knowledge

Why would he care? Felt was a man with high connections. He had all kinds of ways to redeem his own "history" (or control of his "character" as you say). Aliases serve very well. Just ask Bernstein. "The True Story of Deep Throat"... by Deep Throat. If that isn't a perfect 70s title, I don't know what is.

Perhaps, and I do have a copy somewhere, when Bernstein came out with his latest "media event" claiming he'd name DT WHEN DT died.. the family began their plans, right then. But why bother?

If you listen to the left, the left adores Bernstein. They worship at his alter. Just check out this site: Into The Buzz Saw: 18 Tales of Media Censorship if you think even the left was going to permit a "real, documented first-hand account of "deep Throat" without Bernstein's or the Left's "approval". And everyone here thinks the "family" and Bernstein are working "separately"? I don't.

My niece just graduated from a Catholic college and they are still spouting the same old stuff. Just the speakers they invite to the campus are enough to make your skin crawl.
Episcopalian here and hoping Benedict will help shape up our church too.

btw, Jane Fonda came to Kent every May 4th when I attended. Just like the Vietnam Vets: I will never forget what she did.

I don't know the details of his health. But, IMHO, whatever comes out will carry more weight while he's alive than after his death. I think it's smart for him with his family to come out from hiding.

Having said that, I don't respect Felt for what he did. I learned my distrust for the press through my father during Watergate. We even got to show our support for Nixon as he flew out from Andrews during all that turmoil. Nixon will always be loved by my family.

Unfortunately, in the eyes of the MSM and the Left, he is a hero. The winners get to write the history books...

The history is being reviewed 30 years later on the internet. :)

OK..let me ask you..suppose we found out today that he is receiving $6000/month..which it well might be with 25 years of COLA..which disappears when he dies, BTW..do you think that he's getting $6 grand a month value..ball's back in your court, my friend..

Why in the world does he need $6000 in care a month. I'm getting along in years and I would gladly let my son-in-law convert his garage into a bedroom for me. To be near loved ones is far better than to stagnate in a nursing home. Not even a question as far as I am concerned.

Are you planning on spending all your retirement on health care? I certainly hope that I don't have to and can leave some of it to help my kids out along the way. If they had to pay $6000 a month for my care, I'd just as soon not be around.

For the time being it appears he made the final decision and consented to reveal himself without notifying Woodward and Bernstein first.

It may be expecting too much to expect honor among theives. We don't know all the facts and what the understanding was between them.

At this point, W&B would have benefited more if Felt had taken his secret to the grave. W&B would have written another book revealing his identity and harvested another ton of money in book sales and speaking fees. Felt would have received nothing except a pat on the back.

His daughter would receive a few invitations to the Today Show, Larry King, et. al., to talk about what a hero her father was. She would show some family photos and her 15 minutes of fame would be finished except for her appearance before some Leftist groups to accept awards on behalf of her father.

Well, now we know just WHY Nixon was so paranoid. Hopefully, after all these years the truth will come out.

My point is that there are those who believe Ms. Tripp is a hero and those who believe she is a traitor. Hero is not the right word for either of them.

The reporters concealed the truth because the father had asked them to.

You act like they made him stay anonymous all these years.

In this way he at least has a little control over how he'll be characterized by this knowledge.

He has ALWAYS had that power.

for argument sake, let's say that he does get 6K a month, and it is used by his daughter to live on...and when he dies, it is gone...all the more reason why he'd want to make the money for her now, while he's alive. What don't you get about that?

Hell, now we see people say it all the time that the press is the enemy. Nixon was ahead of his time in that regard. He was the right person during his time as President.

To: No Surrender No Retreat
The surviving spouse could receive a certain percentage of his retirement. I have never heard of a daughter receiving a portion of a federal employees retirement. Not by the old CSR or FERS civil service retirement programs. NSNR

Surviving Spouse

To qualify for a survivor annuity, your spouse must have been married to you a total of 9 months. That requirement does not apply, though, if there is a child born of the marriage or your death is accidental.

If your surviving spouse qualifies, he or she will receive annually 55 percent of the amount you would have received if you had retired at the time of your death (this is called the "earned annuity") or the lesser of: 22 percent of your highest 3 years' average salary or 55 percent of the amount your annuity would have been if you had continued working until age 60 at the same "high-3."

A spouse's survivor annuity begins on the day after your death. (It may be paid to a person other than your present spouse if a qualifying court order has awarded the entire survivor annuity to a former spouse.) It ends at the end of the month preceding the month in which the survivor dies or remarries before age 55.

If your surviving spouse remarries before age 55 and the annuity terminates, the survivor annuity may be restored if the remarriage ends by death, annulment, or divorce.

Children

Children qualify for survivor annuities if they are under 18 and unmarried. A child 18 or older may also qualify for a survivor annuity if incapable of self-support because of a disability incurred prior to age 18. In addition, a son or daughter 18 or older may be eligible for a survivor annuity up to age 22 if he or she is a full-time student at a high school, college, or other recognized educational institution. Each child of a surviving spouse or former spouse will be entitled to a monthly benefit of $310. Each child who has no surviving parent or whose surviving parent was never married to you, will be entitled to a monthly benefit of $372. These amounts are reduced proportionately if more than three children are eligible for survivor annuities. The amounts of children's benefits (like retiree and spouse annuities) are periodically increased by cost of living increases.

The rates quoted above are applicable from December 1, 1994, through November 30, 1995.

The survivor annuity to each qualified child begins the day after your death and ends when the child reaches 18 (unless a student or disabled child as described above), marries, or dies. The survivor annuity to student ends when he or she marries, dies, attains age 22, or ceases to be a full-time student. The survivor annuity to a disabled child ends if the child becomes capable of self-support, marries, or dies.

A child's annuity will be paid to his or her guardian if a court has appointed one. If no guardian is appointed, OPM may make the payment to the person who has the care and custody of the child.
