Much has been written about the need and desire of Felt's family to cash in on his 15 minutes of fame. I have no problem with this, but we're also hearing about how he is living in a converted garage at his daughter's house, and that she has taken care of him for 20 years. Before designating her for sainthood. I 'd like to point out that he has been receiving a federal pension all this time, and he retired at the top of the federal pay system I know very little about the federal system, but assume there are many here who can estimate what his salary was at the time he retired, and what his pension is, even assuming that he elected a reduced benefit option to provide a survivor benefitfor his wife.
If Felt were convicted and doing time for his crimes he wouldn't be ALLOWED to make money off his story.
AND.... it's not the daughter's place to tell his story. If he wanted it told he would have come clean years ago when he wasn't senile.
It's just WRONG, I tell ya! :)
Perhaps... Joan is performing a new-age "die with dignity" event with her dad. Of course the money is only for some college thing for her kids. (tic) Instead of confessing, say, to a priest, the new priest of the millenium... is the "eye".. I mean.. the MSM.
She's so damn sure it was her father?? So damn sure?? How can that be??
When was the LAST article that Woodward ever wrote which referred to Deep Throat??
Hildy, I agree with you that nosying around the living arrangements and personal finances of the Felts is ridiculous.
However, it is not Joan Felt's deal to make, and Lord knows it looks like she's been working on trying to make it so for years and finally got the dad to sign on the dotted line.
Her father is the one in the story. Not her.
Her father had a deal with Woodward and Bernstein. He certainly was free to release them from their promise, but we can all see the kind of scruples he has and he chose not to do that.
Yes, they were cashing in, too, but at least they had a role in the saga, unlike this daughter.
Yes, she can reap the reward. I thought her jackpot winner attitude was disgraceful. Her father helped bring down a sitting President who was forced to resign. Even if one thinks that was appropriate, a serious demeanor would be called for, not the grinning hoopla we were treated to.
"the new priest of the millenium... is the "eye".. I mean.. the MSM"
Boy, ain't that the truth!!
We part ways on the "nice family".
My father was a history and political buff. Also VERY patriotic. Remember in the 70's when the "hippie cross" was popular? Someone gave me one and my dad RIPPED that thing off my neck and went nutz over the "German Cross". My father just didn't fare too well in the 60's/70's!
Now we have all these "girly-touchy-feely" guys. WHERE ARE THE REAL MEN!!! :)
I agree with you. W&B and the Left have lionized Deep Throat for decades. According to them, he saved the Republic. On the other hand, Felt was damaged goods as far as his public persona was concerned since he had been convicted of a crime and then pardoned by Reagan.
Once Felt's family learned of his identity as Deep Throat, it must have angered them to no end that almost everyone connected with Watergate was making money off of it except them. Also, it was an opportunity to redeem their father's reputation (among the MSM and the Left). The sad part is we will probably never find out Felt's version of the events. It is telling that the family bypassed W&B and the WP to disclose Felt's identity.
"Her father is the one in the story. Not her"
My point exactly. It's not her story to tell or sell.
I saw somewhere that Mr. Felt was a Navy veteran. That is apparently wrong. A biography of Mr. Felt can be found here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._Mark_Felt
It shows no Navy service but the Congressional service listed counts as Federal service. So, Mr. felt has 38 years Federal service with at least three years at a top grade of GS-18. The guy is getting at least $10,000 a month from his retirement. I've got no sympathy for he or his family. With that much money over 30 years and living in a garage you have to have put something away unless you have a very bad habit.
These Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) links would not have applied to Felt. He was under the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS).
Her father appears in no condition to act on his own. She has the responsibility/burden to look after his affairs and his physcial and mental well being. She believes her father is a hero, albeit mistakenly.
She's acting on behalf of her Father. She's probably his Power of Attorney and Legal Guardian. So yes, she does have the right.
Even before The Graduate was Rebel Without a Cause.
Hillary has been talking a lot about the Republicans trying to undo the New Deal of Roosevelt. Interesting that many of these links go back to that mini Constitutional Revolution. I wonder is all of this, some of this, any of this will play badly for her if these links can get out into the public.
Would Rush or Hannity or The American Spectator do some dot connecting in the next 6 months? I know better than to wonder if Time, Newsweek, etc. would touch it with a 10 foot pole. (Evan Thomas is Norm Thomas' son or grandson...)
Yet, it seems like all of the links are just sitting there, waiting to be connected.
What do other 50 something's and older remember about how the hippies came to their towns?
Pinz
That, I agree with.
I suppose she has LEGAL right to do lots of things. I'm not talking LEGALLY.
Children act on their parents behalf ALL THE TIME. What are you talking about? How do you know he doesn't want to do it now?
I remember the SDS. Infiltrating our schools.
I thought he was senile? If he's not, then why isn't he speaking for himself?
I remember coming home from grade school and telling my dad about what a neat man President Franklin Roosevelt was. "We learned all about the New Deal and the Civilian Conservation Corps and and..." My father didn't rip anything but he complained about 'stupid teachers' and informed me of exactly what they and Roosevelt had all wrong.
Some things don't really ever change, do they? :o) (He didn't want to let us watch The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show either, but we outnumbered him and he relented.) LOL
