As I stated I am not a fan of public schools. But, in my choice of the lesser of the evils(public or home) I choose public. I can show values at home and from church. I agree that you should teach at every chance at home but children need the social interaction with others of different faiths and different backgrounds.

Why do children have to be exposed to the evils of this world? If your child is not an adult, then what personal experience do you have to draw on.

My guess is that your experience with home schoolers is very limited.

If a child has a good solid foundation they will be able to function just fine in this world.

Why?? There is ZERO evidence that this has emphasis on "diversity" has any positive effect of any sort. It's just a major part if the "liberal dogma" of "diversity is good".

In a world that listens to Gangsta Rap, considers "a little chronic OK', tells my kids that abstinence until marriage is impossible, makes Paris Hilton an idol, etc, etc, and so forth, I fervantly pray that my kids are going to be "misfits".

Fitting into this society just is'nt worth your immortal soul.

Last I looked there was nothing in the homeschool handbook about keeping your kids in purdah :)

"I can show values at home and from church."

And just how many hours a day do you actually teach your children these values? I ask this question because the public socilist indrocination centers capture your children for about seven hours per day and berate them for even thinking about morals and church values. Their whole goal is to brainwash your child in their beliefs while making them feel inferior if they actually are taught values that count. Furthermore, their goal is to turn your children against you if you don't toe the socialist line.

I don't think that you are even aware of what our public schools do today.

I realize that home schooling a child takes a lot of self-discipline, effort and time and if you have it, do it. However, I do realize that it is impossible for many to do so because they have to work for a living.

Your day will come when your children come home with an entrirely diferent set of values that you think you are teaching them. Remember, peer pressure is much greater than yours.

Forgive me for ROFHWL, but my local ps is and always has been 98-100% white, Christian, middle/lower class. Fortunately for my children, our "home life" is infinitely more "diverse". :) In fact, just yesterday we had a "surprise" visit from an Australian friend. :)

Dang! Another "myth" busted. ;)

Hi Mikey,

I'll concede that some homeschooled children are over-protected socially. However, I have found that to be the exception and not the rule. I have listened to folks complement my children on their social skills (how well they interact with people of all ages, how mature they are considering their ages, how large their vocabulary is as well as knowledge of topics, even current events) and then the minute they find out they are homeschooled they ask, "aren't you concerned about their socialization?" It doesn't make sense. For the record, my children's playmates have been neighbor children, all public-schooled and of various races and ethnic heritages. We have plenty of "different faiths" in our own family and a Buddhist friend living across the street.

The good news is that there are plenty of educational options out there and homeschooling is but one of them. Parents are free to consider all the options and choose what is best for their family.

As a 28 yr-old homeschool grad with 3 home school grad siblings I find your comment somewhat near sighted. I will pull out my favorite example:
Before being home schooled my older sister was having a grand time in public junior high. Of my sibling she was the only one that did not want to stay home. Her goals in life at that time were to be a waitress and to make the cheer leading squad. Within less than a year of being home schooled her goal was to be an astronaut. After she graduated she went on to get an engineering degree at a top university (3 of the 4 of us are engineers now and the other is a veterinarian). She entered the marines and became one of their first female fighter pilots. While she had/has a great shot at pursuing becoming an astronaut she has since decided when she gets out of the corps she will start a family with her marine husband and homeschool them. Gee, it is a shame she did not get enough socialization...

If you get down in the mud and wrestle with a pig, does the pig get clean or do you get dirty. You are mentioning socialization. Problems or concerns with socialization is the biggest fallacy going and I think the NEA is gloating about keeping these rumors flowing. I would invite you to come see how socially unacceptable my kids are. I often wish they were a little more reclusive.

My kids have had daily interaction with bullies, people of different backgrounds and faith, people who really are nice, and people who are two-faced. This is just from dealing with the kids on our cul-de-sac. In the last few days they have learned the difference between a genuine friend and a groups who act like friends. The neighborhood punk has called my oldest son and nerd. My son has told him, "I know I'm kind of a nerd. But, I'm proud of it."
