Fire destroys The Oasis Restuarant in Austin, Texas (sad news indeed. This place was simply awesome)

A fire Wednesday morning destroyed a Lake Travis restaurant famed for the sunset views from its wooden outdoor decks. Officials say a fire of unknown origin swept through the Oasis before dawn today. Fire crews from surrounding areas were still battling flames as dawn broke over the lakeside bluff topped by the burning restaurant.

Drat, I ate there once with friends (I think). If it's the place I'm thinking of it was great.

Lots of great memories with friends there. Hope they can rebuild.

Probably was lightning. I'm sure they'll rebuild. Maybe they should use Hardyplank this time.

We have taken many of our visitors to this restaurant.

While the views are nice, I have always thought the food was horrible. However, we've spent many happy evenings there with friends, and I hope they rebuild soon.

We had a terrific lightning storm during the night, and I heard that the fire was caused by a lightening strike.

The restaurant is just up the road from Lakeway, where we live.

I wonder how much the insurance will pay?

The place had the best view and the worst food in Austin.

They recently had a dead guy show up in the fountain out in the courtyard. I wonder if there is a connection.

I miss that place already. Three of my favorite places in Austin have burned down since I moved here. The Black Cat, Dot's, and now the Oasis.

It's starting to make me a little paranoid.

Many evenings spent there with friends and family. BEAUTIFUL view of Lake Travis. What a shame.

I just recommended the Oasis on Monday to some friends who recently moved to Austin.

"I have always thought the food was horrible"

That use to be the case but they hired a new chef and upgraded the menu.

See here: (Dining out with Rob Balon: The Oasis review)

I took my sister, her family and my brother there last saturday night and the food was great! They were up from Louisiana for one of my daughters graduation and were totally impressed with the food and especially the view. A true Austin treasure is gone.

I'm glad to hear that the food had improved recently. I have a feeling that they will rebuild soon.
