Robbie Gordon of NASCAR Will Not Drive IRL Races Against Danica Patrick, Citing Weight Advantage
National Review Magazine: The Corner ^ | 6/1/05 | KJ Lopez

Posted on 06/01/2005 8:14:34 AM PDT by gopwinsin04

Robbie Gordon of NASCAR started the discussion, saying that he wouldn't drive in the Indy Car Racing League series until they do something about Danica Patrick's weight 'advantage.'

'The lighter the car, the faster it goes,' Gordon said. 'Do the math. Put her in the car at her weight, then put me or Tony Stewart in the car at 200 pounds and our cars are at least 100 pounds heavier.'

'I wont race against her until the IRL does something to take that advantage away.'

I glanced at the weight of the weight of the drivers in the Indy Car Series. They are pretty much smallish guys --between 140 and 155 lbs.

He seems to be willing to race against guys who are about 60 pounds less and had no problem with it before.

"Yes, that's true, but AJ Foyt gets a pass because he's got his face on the Borg Warner Trophy four times. Danica is looking for victory number one--anywhere.

But you are right--drivers aren't the most humble bunch around--but that said, she still irks me."

She kind of reminds me of a young female version of Robbie Gordon....cocky primmadonna attitude, over-agressive driving style, causing wrecks etc.

I disagree if she wants to be taken seriously she is going to race like the wind and not let anything hold her back until she gets what she wants.

Oh - wait a min. that is what she is doing. Bobby Rahal is not an idiot you know. I will follow his judgment here. And I know what I saw on Sunday. We are looking at another Rick Mears...she just happens to be a she is all.

Male drivers have been posing for beefcake photos for a long time. No one ever tisk tisks them. That is called a double standard and now you see why her path to victory is a bit more difficult than a mans. Darned if she does.. darned if she doesn't.

I say just go for it Danica! Don't let anything you hold you back! :]

I read this and thought of Casey Martin.

He said in order to join the PGA he would need a cart. He wasnt allowed an "advantage" to play.

Any similarities...

Danica is hot

I agree that the pose is a bit over the top for a sports personality. I personally think that sexuality loses some of its appeal when it goes past a certain point; there's something to be said for subtlety.

Can Robbie Gordon compete with 160 pounds? How high does Robbie need the others to weigh? 200? 180? The guy that won weighs 157.

I am not...I have said, "I think", which means it is my opinion, yours may vary.

Like I said many times, I am willing to leave it up to God to make that final decision. However, I think one can conclude that He would be against women posing in that kind of attire.

"She wouldn't last too long in a NASCAR race."

I agree that AppyPappy is off base. Open wheel cars are faster and more dangerous than NASCAR, and to suggest - as the NASCAR chest-thumpers do - that IRL cars are somehow sissy cars driven by sissy drivers is just plain 100% bull****.

Maybe I haven't been paying close attention, but I've never seen a male driver do anything remotely resembling what Danica did in those pics.

All righty then. Tell me, who caused the first caution and how many cars were taken out? Same questions but second caution? Why are you focused just on her accident?

If there's not a double standard, why are we focused on her at all?

You conveniently ignored the part of my post where I said I was happy to see her out there competing and you are trying to paint me as attacking her. It's not going to work because that's not what I believe.

She was out there. She's a brave and attractive young woman. She made some mistakes. So did a lot of other drivers who are just as brave and probably as attractive. They're not getting the same attention are they?

The fact that it's a double standard because she's a woman somehow offends you. The reality that her performance wouldn't have caused any media sensation at all if she had been male seems too hard to grasp.

Robbie Gordon is a whiney little beyotch. Robbie, how about using that hot wind to blow out the rear of your car to propel your car faster.

Well being around motorsports for as long as I have I would recommend that you find a different series to follow. I have heard others make the same complaints you have made. Heck racing isn't the same as when I started being a fan. It is not exactly the same year to year period.

As we know there are plenty of places where "good old boys" still rule.

Everything is Ebb and Flow- so the sport changes and accepts women and a woman will win the Indy 500 someday, it isn't all that bad.

At least this gal can race.

"Humble? I think that would be about the last word I would use to describe her. In fact, I think she's pretty obnoxious and arrogant."

This is what I wrote:

"...and she was nothing but humble and gracious, post-race, even given her awesome finish."

Go back and view her post-race interview, the moment after she took her helmet off. Yes, she was HUMBLE in all that she said. You must not have seen the interview or heard her words of summation. You think that she's pretty obnoxious and arrogant? I guess you've been following her career and know her disposition...but you're wrong about it.

"At the 500 banquet, she was presented with the Rookie of the Year trophy. Her response? "This looks a lot like the trophy for the fastest rookie."

Mostly joke; all truth. Is this line of hers what has you loathing her so?

Some of the media attention is because she is female and some because she is a rookie at the 500. Some of it is because of the attention she got from the fans at the race.

The crowd went wild for her after watching her all month.

And I can say for sure that attention was not all because she is a female. She came back twice from the back of the pack and she lead a bunch of laps, and she got back out there after some damage to her car.

Fans love that stuff.

She also broke a record and when that happens- any record at all, by any driver at the 500, you are going to get a good deal of attention from Indy fans.

The race is about tradition and records and stats for many of the fans. It is about history, and whether some people want to accept it or not- being the first to do anything at Indy is exciting for the fans to see.

Looking for Kim Crosby's bathing suit shots now :) ANd I like Danica Patrick, so count me in her fan club. Being from the South and solid NASCAR country I never really paid attention to Indy racing, she at least got me to watch some of it and its not bad, it aint NASCAR but it aint bad :)

I don't think there's the slightest doubt that this weekend's Indy race at Texas will set an attendance record, and it will be entirely due to Danica.
