NJ FReepers, I need your expertise.
My sister lives in NJ and has asked my advice about which gubernatorial candidate would be better for the NJ Primary. She is a Republican, but doesn't follow politics as closely as the average FReeper. (And I have been too busy to have followed the NJ candidates. I know I like Schundler, but don't know much about the other candidates.)
In particular, she is concerned about taxes and finding a candidate that will be a supporter of tax cuts. And once she decides on a candidate, she should be able to deliver at least 5-10 more votes, as she works her powers of persuasion over her loved ones...LOL...
So if you are a NJ voter and you have a minute, please let me know who'll be getting your vote and why. Then I'll pass on the info to her.
Thanks, NH Liberty
I use to live in NJ. There is a candidate from NJ who looks very good. Don't remember his name but he is the mayor of Bogota.
I'm not a NJ voter, but since I live next door, I've followed this race. Schundler lost my support when on a radio debate he said that law enforcement should not be used to enforce against illegal immigration - but Forrester said yes.
Say hello to Governor Corzine. At least we get to look forward to the possibilty of another emergency outing.

Bret Schundler by a mile.
I'm for Lonegan as well. Very strong conservative in the Reagan tradition.
He's the mayor of Bogota that was referenced in post #2, by the way.

Schundler started out his political career as a left-wing Democrat. He worked in the 1984 Presidential campaign of left-wing Democrat Gary Hart. Hart started his career in politics as the national campaign manager for radical left-wing George McGovern.
Schundler was deeply disappointed when his left-wing candidate Gary Hart failed in his bid to become President of the United States. Schundler very much wanted to see President Ronald Reagan defeated for re-election in 1984.
Schundler tried to create a niche for himself in the New Jersey Democrat party. However, he discovered that the Democrat Party in left-wing Hudson County, New Jersey was already crowded with ambitious Democrats who had worked for decades developing relationships with party leaders and party activists. Schundler saw that he would be at a disadvantage as a newcomer to the Democrat Party in Hudson County, and that the powerful Hudson County Democrat organization supported candidates according to seniority - something which Schundler lacked.
So Schundler decided to join the Hudson County Republican Party in the 1990s. Since Hudson County is overwhelmingly Democrat, the anemic Republican Party had difficulty finding candidates to run for office and was therefore willing to welcome Schundler.
Don't be fooled by what Schundlers says!
Best Candidate out of those sorry excuses of candidates is Doug Forrester who at least does not masquerade around as a conservative, but calls himself a "Moderate".
I believe he is the right candidate for New Jersey.
FYI..check out the editorial on the topic in today's NY Post..
Thanks, have the Post right here at the breakfast table.
Their main reason for backing Doug is his ability to self-finance his campaign...I do hope the NJ GOP has some type of unity plan after the primary..
I'll be voting for Schundler...I like some of the other conservatives as well, but they have no chance...OTOH, against Corzine, no Republican has much of a chance :-(
Be warned Schundler is no Conservative but a fraud.

Don't share your opinion...
But don't many, if not most, High School and college kids start off as Democrats after so many years of liberal "conditioning" by teachers and professors?
It's not reasonable to hold against him his views from 1984, especially if he genuinely has "grown" since then.
Is there anything that he's said or done lately (or even over the past 10 years) that has led you to believe he's a fraud? If so, please let us know. Thanks.
Who the hell are you to tell me I cant share my opinion?
And I was just stating facts about his career.
Schundler supports further opening America's porous borders to massive Third World immigration. He always says that "we are a nation of immigrants" and that massive Third World immigration is beneficial to the United States. In the last debate Schundler stated he was against enforcing immigration laws, and would encourage state agencies not to work with Federal agencies to report illegals.
Schundler raised taxes while he was mayor, because in his words, he needed the funds to help the city's "poor" - welfare recipients, criminals and drug addicts who "need" more money from hardworking and grossly overburdened taxpayers.
Schundler is a fanatic supporter of "affirmative action" racial discrimination against whites. While he was mayor of Jersey City, he was a huge supporter and promoter of AA.
