From the article, last two paragraphs, WHO spokesman:

"I have been telling people that it is not over yet, and the danger, while not as it was before, is still there," said Domingos, who recently returned from the area.

"We have to continue to push the message to make sure people don't relax ... If they don't participate, if cases remain hidden, then we will never break this disease."

It's been 10 days since the last new recorded case. There are 32 days left that there must be no new cases recorded, before the outbreak is considered over...I also not that in this article WHO gave a different case total (over 300) than the Angolan Minister of Health gave in the LaPrensa article (which was over 400).

Title: China’s categorization of the lowly transmissible Ebola virus

(Note: Boxun cann’t verify the following information.)

The incidence of Ebola virus in China has caused some areas in China
to have mutating strain of Ebola virus. So far, all the clinical
cases are infected through contact of blood. There hasn’t been any
reports on a infection through other means. The reported cases in
Guangdong, Hunan and Fujian provinces all carry different
characteristics.

Currently, the official categorization of the Ebola virus based on
where the virus was found in China.

1. EB-SZ type: It was found in Shenzhen of South China. People
contracted the virus showing severe illness, and they were infected
through the contact of blood. Incubation period is 2-4 weeks. Some
individual cases have incubation period up to 6 m
onths. Some cases
are asymptomatic. Those infected people’s immunity drops suddenly
that triggers other co-infections and complications. When non-Ebola
virus related infections become severe, it could lead to diathesis
from the major blood vessels. In severe cases, blood vessels
disintegrate; muscular tissues became fluid-like; patients died of
lack of oxygen due to haemorrhage. After the case die, the
disintegration symptoms persist with the change of room temperature,
ie above 12.4 degree Celcius. The process continues until the carcass
completely disintegrate. The disintegration process slows down when
temperature is lower than 8.7 degree Celcius; and the process halts
at below 4 degree Celcius. Therefore, the best treatment for infected

The characteristic of this virus is its intermittent exacerbation of
the symptoms. This virus is suspected to be the mutated by-product of
Ebola virus and other viruses. The confirmative diagnosis is usually
made by the identification of EB-SZ-like virus in the tissues of
deceased cases.

3. EB-HN type: It was found in Hunan of Central China.
Transmission is unknown. Incubation is about 30-60 days. Infected
cases experience discomfort due to the localized diathesis. After the
disintegration of blood ve
ssels, patients experience symptoms related
to blood loss. Most of the deceased cases’ heavily infected organs
were in their lungs. If the blood vessels of the internal organs were
infected, it will cause hepatic damage. Deceased case’s face and
bottom will disintegrate within 2-8 hours afterwards; their nails
also fall apart. Autopsy found that the tissues of tendons were as
soft as muscle. The deceased cases’ blood are contagious. Contact
through other means will not lead to infection of the virus.

4. EB-FJ type: It was found in Fujian province of South China.
The virus was transmitted through the carrier’s blood. Incubation
period is about 20-30 days. Infected people will become
immunocompromised that leads to influenza induced pneumonia and
bleeding in the lungs. Subsequently, it leads to respiratory failure.
Autopsy found that the vessels in the deceased cases’ lung were fluid
like; other tissues were normal. Dece

5. EB-ZJ type: It was found in Zhanjian of South China. Not much
details on this virus subtype.

6. EB-SZ77 type: It was found in Shenzhen of South China
(adjacent to Hong Kong). This virus could infect birds.

I read the post earlier, but had to go out and wanted a thoughtful reply.

This is truly horrible--that's my thoughtful reply. There are evidently no statistics or any fatality rates, no case numbers, nothing except these Ebola variants that are distinguished primarily by location and minor symptomatic differences.

This spread of Ebola (or some other hemorrhagic fever, we really do not know that it is Ebola) with no official communication to the world outside of China--very irresponsible on China's part. This is potentially worse than SARS. The reputation of the Chinese since their bad behavior on SARS is in tatters.

What is China doing about this? I noted that there are remarks that since the hemorrhagic fever ruins the immune system, patients become infected with other viruses as well...can they recombine?

I'm in a bit of shock, truthfully.

How long has this been going on? Where did it start?

First, those are some really, REALLY, bad bugs.

Second, how close is the genetic connection between Marburg, Ebola, and H5N1 flu? Until reading this, I would have said H5N1 was completely unrelated.

Third, NO WAY should China be behaving this way. Behavior like theirs raises all kinds of red flags.

That region of sequence identity is what I was referring to when I wondered about how close the genetic similarity is between H5N1 and Marburg/Ebola.

If this identical genetic sequence is long enough, then I assume it is not likely to have occurred naturally (perhaps recombination could do it, however).

China's refusal to share information the whole world needs for defense of the human race, combined with this new found genetic similarity between two very different viruses, combined with the very surprising claim that Ebola is present in China, raises some obvious (and horrible) questions.

So... Perhaps the entire report is bogus? Because, if it's not, we have a really big problem...

hint substitute "refusal" for unable. Influenza teams are not prepared or equipped or trained to harvest samples from a BHL 4 zone.

BHL 4 is biohazard level 4, that's the level, in a lab, where there is a decontamination/suiting-unsuiting chamber outside the lab, where the researcher puts on a space suit and still has a sealed box in a sealed lab to ensure NO possibility of contact with the bioagent, no possibility of escape of the agent...

Yes, it does take training to use...and even with all that, it's still dangerous.
