Good point here. If it was indeed Felt, then Woodward and Bernstein don't look like all that much as investigators. They were getting their leads from the top investigative agency on Earth.

It was obvious the they had to be getting their leads from someone with inside knowledge in a position to know.

I don't think it's a good point to say the source was good therefore the reporters weren't as good.

I was under the impression that Deep Throat was actually a comilation of more than one person... that the dirt was coming from multiple sources and W&B fabricated the idea of a single person to protect those sources.

Exactly. Yeah, they had one heck of a source, but they still had to put together the timeline and tie everything together, a big job.
