What was Watergate?
The June 17, 1972, burglary that became a constitutional crisis
Tuesday, May 31, 2005 Posted: 11:22 PM EDT (0322 GMT)
(CNN) -- Initially dismissed by the White House as a "third-rate burglary," the June 17, 1972, break-in at Democratic National Committee headquarters mushroomed into a constitutional crisis that led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon.
The scandal began during the run-up to that year's presidential election, when Democratic Sen. George McGovern was running against Nixon. Five men were arrested at DNC's headquarters at the Watergate office-hotel-apartment complex in Washington.
The men were at DNC headquarters to photograph key documents and replace eavesdropping equipment installed during a previous break-in.
A Watergate security guard, Frank Wills, discovered them and called the police, who arrested the five men at gunpoint in the DNC offices.
The burglars were found to be part of the "plumbers," a White House unit set up to investigate leaks of sensitive information after the release of the Pentagon Papers.
One of the burglars, retired CIA employee James McCord, was employed by the Committee to Re-elect the President as a security consultant.

What was Monicagate?
The ORAL SEX that became a constitutional crisis
Initially dismissed by the White House as a "personal matter,"
The White House went to great lengths publicly to distance the president from the INTERNS and their ATTORNEYS,
Mike McCurry or Joe Lockhart (I'm trying to forget it), the White House press secretary, downplayed the SEXCAPADES as a "private matter between President Clinton and Hillary (who hasn't been near Bill Clinton's bed in years except to throw lamps)."
NO reporters for ANYONE, pursued the story immediately after the ORAL SEX was made public.
NO reporters filed groundbreaking stories on MONICAGATE until MATT DRUDGE forced Michael Isikoff to RELEASE the story he was SITTING ON.

I like "our story" better than "theirs". lol!

So...it was childish, petty revenge.Maybe not. See #618.
The revenge may be a little deeper and widespread. Grudges held tight.

OH, OH, OH, I know what I wanted to ask you!
Recall that Ben Bradlee was the WP's honcho under Mrs, Graham?
Has Ben been running his mouth on any TV news shows today?
Ben has stated on several occasion that he was privy to Deep Throat's identity.

Chrissie Matthews is having an orgasm with Robert Redford and "All The President's Men", "award-winning film". PUKE. Well, yeah. When it's PROMOTED by every damn "news' organization" on the face of the earth as being gospel.

Has Ben been running his mouth on any TV news shows today? No, he hasn't. He released a statement and that's it. It was a snotty attempt at humor (which failed, IMO).

In a statement, the Post reported, Woodward and Bernstein said, 'W. Mark Felt was 'Deep Throat' and helped us immeasurably in our Watergate coverage. However, as the record shows, many other sources and officials assisted us and other reporters for the hundreds of stories that were written in The Washington Post about Watergate.'
The trio of Woodward, Bernstein and Bradlee had agreed to keep the identity of 'Deep Throat' secret until his death. 'We've kept that secret because we keep our word,' Woodward was reported as saying.
Bradlee told the Post it stunned him that 'the g***amn secret has lasted this long.'

Actually I think this whole thing was a battle between the Nixon Administration and the post Hoover FBI, with Felt as a point man, possibly a self appointed point man. But I can assure you there were others in the organization, some in high end positions that were quietly applauding when Nixon resigned.
To: kcvl
I've always found Bradlee *smarmy* -- he bragged about keeping quiet about all of JFK's dalliances "for the good of the country" -- yeah right - he was right in the middle of it.

How will they explain their lies about Deep Throat being a White House insider, drinking scotch, chain smoking, being a snitch out of "idealism," as well as their claim that Deep Throat wasn't in a position to arrest anyone?! Technically, Felt was an insider, and had been in the Oval office acting as a consultant to Nixon regarding wiretaps. He later felt Nixon and his boys were tapping his own telephones, which is one of the reasons he started meeting the reporters in person, in multi-level parking garages.
He did drink, and he did smoke. And lets face it, the number two man in the organization generally doesn't partake in arrests. Just as a Deputy Cheifs of police in major cities isn't on the streets making arrests. And "not being in a position to arrest anyone" could mean a lot of things.
To: Southack
How will Woodward and Bernstein explain their belief that Colson should go to jail for leaking one FBI file, while simultaneously protecting Felt for leaking scores of FBI file information?!
MF is a democrat, therfore he is a hero. That bad Nixon had to be brought down in disgrace. It's the old "end justifues the means."

No, Felt hadn't smoked since 1946. He didn't drink scotch, he drank martinis. He could arrest people. He wasn't powerless. He wasn't a White House insider. He wasn't an idealist, either. Felt was a pro-Hoover man who brought Nixon down because Nixon passed Felt up for the top FBI post.
Felt was convicted of ordering illegal break-ins. Felt has now admitted illegally leaking FBI file contents. Felt violated his oath of office with his personal vendetta against Nixon, too.
Lets also not forget that Felt lied, lied, and lied again...as Did Woodward and Bernstein.
Oh, W&B said that Deep Throat hated the telephone, too. That's yet another lie. Felt was one of the *few* FBI agents willing to take reporters' phone calls.

Monica Crowley, Nixon advisor tells Scarborough that Nixon thought, wrongly, that he would be protected like Kennedy by the "old lying media" (my words, not hers).
Pat Buchanan said that the people who hung Nixon were worse than Nixon.
