Didn't Woodward basically admit recently that he had embellished some elements (like the smoking) in the story?

But the deep truth of Watergate is that there was not really much to leak. It all amounted to a second class burglary, in which Republican operatives used questionable methods to ferret out questionable activities performed by equally corrupt Democrats. Plus discussion on Nixon's part of making use of one FBI file against his enemies, which he decided not to use after all.

The real essence of Watergate was to take these not so stunning bits of fact and make them into the biggest propaganda campaign ever mounted by the American press

I absolutely agree. In the intervening years we witnessed many a story that should have been given half the journalistic coverage and outrage---I refer to the Riady/Huang/Lippo/Clinton business for one excellent example---that more than exceeded any malfeasance represented by Watergate.

Democrat presidents elicit studied indifference from reporters when evidence emerges that warrants further investigation. Republican presidents result in unending digging and hyping the least bit of information into some kind of "scandal".

Deep Throat is Felt, why wouldn't Woodard and Berstein confirm that after Deep Throat outed himself

MSM could be confused - might be that Woodward & Bernstein Felt DT.

"You just fell for the misdirection he used. That was the purpose."

A lie is a lie. I fell for nothing.

Woodward and Bernstein said that Deep Throat was a heavy smoker. Mark Felt never smoked.

Furthermore, Woodward and Bernstein (mark my words) won't confirm Felt as Deep Throat.

Instead, *you* are simply falling for the latest fad theory on this subject. Some reporter unrelated to the Watergate affair claims he's found Deep Throat in a demented guy who can't remember anything.

...And you're buying that story.

From a CNN article from 2002:

http://archives.cnn.com/2002/ALLPOLITICS/06/17/deep.throat.facts/

MARK FELT: The former FBI official is considered a leading candidate. White House tapes from 1972 recorded Nixon aide H.R. Haldeman telling the president that most of the leaks were coming from Felt. Also, the Hartford Courant newspaper reported that a 19-year-old it interviewed in 1999 said Bernstein's son Jacob had told him that Felt was Deep Throat. Bernstein and his ex-wife, Nora Ephron, deny he ever told his son.

"Nixon was destroyed by sheer vitriol and lies, with only a small admixture of facts to leaven it."

Watergate didn't take Nixon down, it was Nixon's reaction to it and the attempted cover up. Nixon drew a line in the sand and that was his mistake, that is what people could not forgive. At that point, he lost public support.

It's not something that you would forget.

Maybe the guy has Alzheimers. He's 91...he has the right to forget at that age.

Catch 22.

If he's forgotten, then he can't confess. If he has confessed, then he hasn't forgotten.

It's not something that you would forget. That's like a veteran forgetting that there was a war.

From a 1999 article in Slate:

http://slate.msn.com/id/2065299/

In the summer of 1999, [Bob] Woodward showed up unexpectedly at the home of Felt's daughter, Joan, in Santa Rosa, California, north of San Francisco, and took him to lunch, Joan Felt, who was taking care of him at her home, told me.

She recalled that Woodward made his appearance just after a mini-controversy broke in the press late July 1999 about whether Bernstein had told his then-wife, Nora Ephron, that Felt was Deep Throat. Woodward had been interviewing former FBI officials for a book he was writing on Watergate.

However, now confused because of the effects of a stroke, Felt was in no shape to provide credible information.
