Karen DeRome had three very important reasons for participating in the Melaleuca Freedom Celebration's National Guard Appreciation Run in St. Paul on Monday.
Their names are Melissa, Michelle and Maggie.
"There wouldn't be the home of the free without the brave," DeRome said Monday, standing on the Wabasha Bridge with the 2-year-old triplets as they got ready to participate in a 5-kilometer run/walk as part of the Melaleuca celebration.
DeRome, her husband, Mike, and their daughters were among more than 500 people who took part in the 5K and 10K runs.
Simultaneously, in Taji, Iraq, about 500 Minnesota National Guard members held a 5K race at their base about 15 miles north of Baghdad.
"I think it's awesome,'" said DeRome, who pushed the triplets in a stroller while she ran the race with her 8-year-old daughter, Allison.
