India opens huge new naval base
BBC ^ | May 31, 2005

India has opened a new naval base on its Arabian Sea coast which it says will become one of the largest in Asia. The base at Karwar in south-western Karnataka state will have space for 42 warships and deep water for an aircraft carrier and nuclear submarines to dock.

It fulfils a long-standing demand by India's navy for an exclusive facility.

Until now Indian naval bases have had to share space with commercial ports, leaving them congested and vulnerable to attacks.

The BBC's Sunil Raman in Bangalore says the INS Kadamba base covers 4,400 acres and will become the biggest operational base in India.

"With the commissioning of this base, the navy will fulfil the responsibility of defending the country and safeguarding its exclusive economic zone."

The base has been commissioned 19 years after its foundation stone was laid, mainly because of delays due to funding problems.

But in 2000, the Indian government decided to make it a priority and channelled huge funds towards the project.

Presently, the base can berth around 11 ships but the number will rise to 42 in the next couple of years.

A ship-lifting system built by European engine maker Rolls Royce at a cost of $35m will become operational by the end of this year.

" What is an Indian navy going to do? "

So that Indian Ocean remains "Indian" Ocean and not "Chinese Ocean" or "Paki Ocean".

"As a former citizen of India, I'm wondering if they were finalyl able to get running water to my grandfather's village...."

So why dont you something for your village to help out your grandpa instead of criticising India. At least that way you can make yourself useful than what you are and also repay some debts you owe to your former motherland. It too easy to pass sermons to your former countrymen on what they should or shouldnt do sitting half the world away with all the personal comforts and luxury.

And if you cant do anything at least tell your grandpa to get the hell outta that village and go to some place that has running water. There are plenty of places in India that has running water. And if you cant do that either then just shut the hell up!

Then why bother about running water for your grandfather? I am sure your grand father can take care of himself better than you. And where ever you live, your grandfather would be very proud of you if you can give yourself an education good enough to spell the word "piece" correctly.

Well, spend all money in pipes and sewer lines, make handouts to everyone, so all can live in the comfort of their lazing ways. With this, India's neighbours will be pleased and won't ever think of making an attack. So why not disband the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force et al? Who's going to attack a country with no military and all toilets and sewer lines? Whose grandfathers and grandmothers need a wall of safety around them?</sarcasm>

Aren't some on FR more socialist than the ones who openly admit it?

"That seems more like a picture of your wife rather than a pic. of the ship lifting system ."

And also it looks like some part of the body other than the navel.

You shouldnt really worry about crack pots like Jersey who by his own admission really has no clue about how much India has changed. They are in a time freeze and keep imagining India as when they left it. What is worse with this guys Jersey he probably has no image of what India is or has become because by his own admission he left it when he was a very young.

You know, as far as I'm concerned you're an American - I could care less about the fact that you were born in India. I give the same weight to your views about India as I would to the views of any other random American, which is to say, not a whole lot, since you really have no experience upon which to base your views.

You speak of "touching a nerve" - this thread seems to have touched one in you. What I don't understand is why you are more interested in India than any other American - you call attention to the fact that you are a "former citizen", and yet you emphasize at the same time that you don't care anything about "that third world piece of shit country".

Seems a bit contradictory to me. Could it possibly be that you have some identity issues because despite having an American passport and accent, people there still keep calling you an "Indian", because of that *brown skin*?

Navies other than the US are just useful objects of target practice. The US technological lead in this big. Heck, even China's desire to control the Taiwan straits is just a fantasy, and will be for the forseeable future.

& what exactly is the logic behind your point??Just because the US Navy is miles ahead doesn't mean that other navies don't have needs & those requirements have a lot more to them than just challenging the USN.With the rate of improvement in Indo-US ties,it won't be inconcievable if US naval forces can use this facility, which is at the crossroads of the Arabian Sea,Indian Ocean & Bay of Bengal.

I dont know what you mean by that. What has US technological lead got to do with India strengthening its navy. So if US technological lead makes it overwhelmingly strong still thats no reason why India (or for that matter countries like Japan and Australia) shouldn't be having a navy. Just because the US is far too strong does not mean that its a waste of time and money for others to guard once border, shipping lanes, economic zone and protect onself from enemies.

I am unaware of any navy going about harrassing others without US permission. The tubs are a joke.

Then I suppose the Chinese have taken US permission to set up Naval bases in Gwadar (near Iran) to challange India's shipping route and also to set up Naval bases on Cocos Islands off Andaman Nicobar Islands(India) to monitor Indian Naval activity.

Their tubs can float anywhere they want. They just won't do anything hostile, because if they do, they won't float anymore.

As a former citizen of India, I'm wondering if they were finalyl able to get running water to my grandfather's village....

Maybe, maybe not. What's that got to do with the defense of a country that's facing attacks from islamofascists and chicoms. Sure, it'd be utopia if we could all not spend money on guns and spend it on helping the poor more, but ground realities are ground realities.

What is an Indian navy going to do? Facilitate the invasion of Sri Lanka?

Let's see, what can they do? Oh, yeah, HELP OTU THEIR NEIGHBORS IN THE AFTERMATH OF A TSUNAMI or PROTECT SHIPPING FROM PIRATES IN THE MALACCA STRAITS or protect their country from Islamofascists and the Chinese Navy or keep the peace in East Africa and the ME
