Islam is expansionist religion imbued with martial fervor. It sees the West as materially decadent and deficient in religious beliefs. The Western soldier is not going to die for his God and the West will not forsake the good life to defend itself from its own alienation. An alienation evident in the attacks on Christianity in America from secular elites. To Islamists, all of this proves jihad is divinely inspired and they see no reason to forsake it in the face of an enemy who believes in nothing. Perhaps it can turn into something different but it will require a revival of faith in the West to turn the tide in what has basically been a 1400 year long war, interspaced with brief punctuations in the violence. An honest understanding of the way our enemy fights is also the key to overcoming our weaknesses that keep us from attaining victory.

The excessive form of jihad currently practiced by al-Qaeda and others could, Cook semi-predicts, lead to its “decisive rejection” by a majority of Muslims. Jihad then could turn into a non-violent concept.
The great challenge for moderate Muslims (and their non-Muslim allies) is to make that rejection come about, and with due haste.
