...And The Fish Just Jumped Into The Box!

OBX - Wow! Flying mackerel! All you got to do is open the box, stand back and they jump right in! This picture is proof of it!

Well, not really. But it sure looks like it though!

This picture was sent to us by Andy, the webmaster of http://www.reelbuzz.com. Whenever he sends us a picture, it is bound to be a good one. And this one is!

It was taken aboard the "Rigged Up Sportfishing" captained by Charles Haywood out of Oregon Inlet.

Thanks Andy. We look forward to the next picture. We wonder what it could be? Self filleting fish?

The Outer Banks are an awesome place to be this time of year. I will be there in two weeks on business.

It's really not all that unusual for several species in the king mackerel family, Cero, Spanish and Kingfish to "skyrocket" or jump clear out of the water. It happens quite often. Usually the fish are "stimulated" when it happens, there is bait or chum in the water.

I know Charles Haywood....I used to fish with Capt. Tony Tillett (dean of Outer Banks tuna captains) when Charles was his first mate. Had a lot of good times on that boat, and a lot of good tuna steaks afterwards. Charles was one of the best mates I ever fished with....been meaning to go down and fish with him now that he's a captain. So much to do, so little time....maybe a December wahoo trip.....

A billion years ago....My pop and I were motoring from one fishing spot to another in a little 16 ft..fiberglass boat..in the Salton Sea.

We must have steered right on top of a school of mullet...as they were jumping everywhere. We had them going over our heads, over the bow, over the stern, everywhere! They were good size too...maybe 5-7 lbs. or so.

My dad said...Quick, son get the net...see if you can grab one. Ha!! I didn't get one...but I will never forget that. Forever imprinted in my brain.

FRegards,

I was at the Outer Banks two years ago on vacation. Loved it! Wish I could return.
