One in four of France's 42 million eligible voters had turned out by midday to cast their ballots in the country's hotly-contested referendum on the EU constitution, the interior ministry said.
The 25.08 percent turnout was nearly five points higher than the 20.39 percent who had turned out by the same hour in 1992 to vote on the Maastricht treaty, which created the European Union's common currency, the euro.
Polling stations opened across mainland France at 8:00 am (0600 GMT), and were to remain open until 8:00 pm nationwide, with residents of Paris and Lyon given an extra two hours until 10:00 pm to cast their ballots.
In France's overseas departments and territories, where voters went to the polls on Saturday due to the time difference, participation was rather low overall, but higher than in 1992 for the referendum on the Maastricht treaty.
Some 39 percent of registered voters cast ballots in the archipelago of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon off the coast of Canada, four times more than in 1992, according to French interior ministry figures.
Turnout stood at 23.15 percent in French Guiana, 28.37 percent in Martinique and 22.21 percent in Guadeloupe.
Yeah, it does. This should be interesting....
But remember this is only by mid-day.
Tere are 1.4 million voters in the French overseas territories. therefore they will provide 2.8 million "oui" votes.
Thanks for the post. Off to work. Will check this evening.
That was by mid-day.(4 hours). They still have 8 hours left, which would give 75% if the same ratio held..........
man, does it just seem that the French just don't care one way or the other?
25% seems a rather low turn out...
By mid-day on a Sunday? I'd think that would be a respectable turn-out.
Here's Chirac voting early...

...having a little trouble with the hung chad :)
Methinks they will care if it passes...eventually.
Is Jimmy Carter there making sure Chirac and the Euro Corps is in line on this. Is the OSCE there like they were for the American election.
Watch this event as it shows the real colors of the players involved. FUN!
LOL. Worms have a hard time voting.
What's your favorite part of Europe: Canada, French Guiana, Martinique, Guadeloupe. or Fiji?
Remember, though, they go to church on Friday, and they pray five times a day on the other days.
> That was by mid-day...
Right...Sunday morning, still in bed. People around here always vote before going to work.
Sacre Bleu!!
Martinique of course (To Have and Have Not--Bogart and Bacall).
Seriously, it would be creepy if the overseas departments voted oui.
That isn't a constitution, it's an anthology.
