That's embarrassing. I didn't try to win. Especially after winning the fickle finger of fate a couple of week ago. However, thank you.

Perhaps. You are closer to what's going on there than I am from here. I'll defer to your knowledge of current events.

The bad thing is, other than what you just posted, John McCain feels the same way as Shieffer....

He sat on Wolfie's show today talking about how he, John Warner, and Lindsay Graham have discussed, and decided that we need MORE hearings into the horrendous abuses, that our troops have inflicted on those poor, poor terrorists!!!

Even on Memorial Day & Veteran's Day they don't have a good word for the military...I just don't understand them.

McCain is a mess. I admire him for his service & do believe he is honest....but, and it's a big BUT, he has lost his sense of judgement. How he could call for a congressional investigation is beyond belief.

Thanks for the link to the article.

Some good points that I and others have tried to underscore are confirmed here:

Added Nelson: "It's not a contract that's enforceable. It's a mutual agreement that is self-enforcing."

Some have spoken of it erroneously as such a contract. It is not and it is exactly as Graham and DeWine in particular have stated

Some here called them liars. Well, here's Nelson the dem confirming what they said.

More:

Ironically, though, progress slowed 10 days ago when Byrd and Warner proposed using the document to encourage Bush to consult more widely in the future with the Senate on judicial nominees.

So, while the subject was raised, as I certainly had no doubt it had, my and others' observation that it was not some kind of requirement (absurd!) is evidenced here to be not supported by the participants anywhere near unanimously. Likely a very few of the 14 had some grandiose ideas about this topic but on its face it was ridiculous to act like it was set in stone as some have acted.

Sen. Mike DeWine (news, bio, voting record), R-Ohio, stepped in last weekend, helping narrow the language so it did not impinge on presidential prerogatives.

So this is more evidence that DeWine's participation was, if an agreement was being worked on, to make it the best possible one for the WH and yet he's the one who gets heaped with scorn and threats of retaliation.

And there is evidence of Graham's role to save the option, too. The evidence some here denied:

The draft said Democrats could filibuster only in "extraordinary circumstances" and that Republicans would oppose any rules changes "in light/assuming the spirit and commitments made in this agreement."

"In light" of, a construction credited to Graham, won out.

Everyone should think long and hard what would have happened if the CO had been voted on, as planned, and failed. It is still there and that's the bottom line.

During the time the "fair and balanced" on Zarqawi was on, on CNN, I was prolly watching a report from the Rolling Thunder motorcycle meeting ---- with Gen. Myers, in a "flag shirt"....

Did you happen to notice if CNN did a live shot from the Rolling Thunder speeches?

To: All

I have a question for everyone here---

My husband (who is a Viet Vet) and I were watching Fox News when Gen. Myers was giving his speech to the Rolling Thunder group---

When he started his speech, he mentioned that Memorial Day was a day to honor our troops fighting now, our veterans from the past, and our war dead....

Now, I turned to my husband and said that I always thought that Memorial Day was a day for honoring the troops that have died in the course of defending our country...and that Veteran's Day, was more for the LIVING military to be honored...

Which, IMHO, makes saying "Happy Memorial Day" a rather cruel non-sequiter....it should be day to perhaps celebrate their courage and honor, when they were killed, but to wish someone a "Happy" Memorial Day, just doesn't cut it with me...

BTW, my husband feels the same as me....

I would like opinions from any/all that wish to give them regarding this subject...thanks

... MSM types believe they are in the center, while their "center" is farther left than they realize.

####

I am still waiting for the challenge question to a "Mainstreamer" - "Who do you see to your left if you are in the middle?"

I bet we would see lots of deer in the headlights looks, accompanying a lot of spluttering!

From my standpoint anyone wishing others a "Happy Memorial Day" does so without any malice whatsoever to our troops and with all the respect for our soldiers both past and present that is possible. You will find few websites as patriotic as fr and it's inhabitants.

As one who has said happy Memorial Day, I guess I should be one to respond. Being a veteran from the 60's myself, there was no malice or disrespect involved It might be better to use other words to emphasize this holiday but no offense was intended nor meant by it. Just as holiday is no longer holy in most minds. I admit to wishing people a happy Easter too.

But cruel? I don't think so. Today IS a celebration of those American men and women who gave their lives for the freedom and prosperity we enjoy as a country. To me, I don't mourn their deaths as much as I celebrate their unselfish sacrifice and their life.

NO critisizm was meant to anyone, especially here at FR---

I was more of a question that just pops up when I am watching the news, and something just hits me as odd...

I am sure NO ONE who says it means anything but the utmost respect....I am sorry if I led you or anyone to believe that I was being critical....just a thought, perhaps better left unsaid, sorry.

I agree. Memorial Day is to remember the fallen. Those who paid the price, whether death or injury. One can't be happy, rather proud and in awe. Thankful and grateful.

The Lord knows, there's been so many these past few years. We lost almost 60 this month alone. When I think of all the years I served, without a real war going on, I am amazed at these younger guys (and some gals!) now. They are truly heroes. Prayers be to God that America will always have such men!
