Pepper spray still illegal
27 May 2005
CAMDEN Police are warning women that carrying pepper spray in self-defence is still illegal.
Two girls - an American and German - have recently received cautions after the spray was found in their handbags.
One of the girls was trying to get into Koko's nightclub in Mornington Crescent, while the other was stopped and searched in the street.
Both said they carried it for their own protection and didn't realise it was an offence in this country.
Although widely available in America, pepper spray is classed as a firearm in the UK and possession carries a minimum sentence of five years.
A Camden Police spokeswoman said: "These girls have cautions and the incidents will boost our firearm statistics.
Right out of the gun grabbers handbook. The inmates are running the asylum.
In fact, in America this would have been justification for the girls to use the pepperspray on their assailants since no real cop would dare do this without some sort of justification.
They can have my jalapeno when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers.
This is intended to be a particularly jingoistic and prejudiced statement:
Do the Brits have ANY kind of clue?
Why women (and men presumably) NEED pepper spray: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1412240/posts
The british were long known for pragmatic and sober views until WWII and then something happened. It seems the lie promulgated by Himmler and his ilk infested the body politik of Great Britain like a cancer. The English could fix their dreadful violent street crime statistics overnight by allowing law abiding private citizens to possess firearms. The drunken yob outside the pub might think twice about pulling a knife if he thinks there's a good possibility he might get his head blown off. The ability to deter violence by having the ability to counter violence with violence has been shown innumerable times empirically to work. Good luck brits. I hope there's time to win your country back from the social engineers. I know the story is about pepper-spray but the social issues are deeper.
This is sooo absurd. How can a nation of intelligent people tolerate it?
Thank God for the Fourth Amendment.
Or has it been superseded by "Return of the Son of the Patriot Act?
Even the leftist imbeciles in the California legislature figured out this was stupid and did away with our ban on pepper spray. Great Britain is beyond redemption.
What the h-ll are the Brits thinking? If words still have any meaning then a firearm is a weapon that BURNS a propellant to fire a projectile.A can of pepper spray being classed as a firearm is just silly.Maybe these dolts can completely expose themselves by classing a beer bottle as a firearm.
Massive understatement. If you're carrying a hatpin, cane, sand-filled sock or any other object with the acknowledged purpose of using it as a weapon for self-defense, you're in violation of the law. The only allowed use of a weapon for defending yourself is something that you just happened to have on hand but you weren't carrying purposely for use as a weapon. They're unbelievable.
What's not mentioned is that the girls had their pepper spray confiscated. They spent the remainder of the evening "entertaining" a group of 20 liquored up yobs.
I think the Brits need to quit drinking that water from the Thames.
No state has the right to deny a human being the means of self-defense.
" So now rapists need not worry about getting 'maced'??????"
Yet we still have a lower rate of rape per capita than the US, suggesting that pepper spray may not be a magic solution...
States have the "right" to do whatever the people will put up with. People should not support a state that threatens their right to self defense.
Now there's a canard.
That's the beauty of our constitution. It defines "state" and its "rights" quite differently.
