IRAN: VOTE FOR RAFSANJANI AND WE WILL HAVE NUCLEAR BOMBS, SAYS RELIGIOUS LEADER

Tehran, 27 May (AKI) - Hojatolislam Gholam Reza Hasani, a representative of Iran's supreme spiritual leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, in Iranian Azerbaijan, has no doubts as to who to vote for in the next presidential elections on 17 June. "You need to vote for Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani," said Hasani. "This way we will finally be able to have for ourselves the atomic bomb to fairly stand up to Israeli weapons," said Hasani.

"Freedom, democracy and stupidities of this type cannot be carried over to any part, and these concepts are out of sync with the principles of Islam," said Hasani, the imam who led Friday prayers in the main city of western Iranian Azerbaijian.

"Islam always spoke with the sword in the hand and I don't see why now we have changed attitudes and talk with the other civilisations."

Well, there you have it. Abject honesty about their religion and their intentions.

Religion of peace indeed.

According to a recent Amir Kabir poll - Iran's second largest university:

5-10% of Iranian students <30 = 70% support the regime
85% support a secular democratic government

although 98% of Iranians are muslim
according to BBC world presidential poll Iran is the most pro-Bush nation in the entire world and they are vehemently pro-US. According to several polls one of the most pro-American groups in the US.

The presence of Islam in Iran is a complex one and should not be intermingled with the Arab version of Islam.

I have enjoyed your posts & books, but you are extremely lacking on the consistent battle between pre-islamic and post-islamic Iran and the difference between that confrontation and every single nation in the region.

The intentions of the mullahs should not be confused with the intentions of the people.

.....and a peanut farmer or redneck from Arkansas will never be elected President of the United States.

It looks like the Iranian higher learning institutions have left wing loonies speak at their graduations just like here in the states.

This guy sounds like he is making campaign promises he full well intends on keeping!

In Iran, pro-democracy students have taken to the streets several times during the past couple of years. A poll conducted this month by student activists at Amir Kabir University the countries second largest university provided a discomfiting message for the reigning Ayatollahs. The University poll chronicled a mere five to ten percent support for the mullahs and eighty-five percent support for a secular democratic government. President Bush has consistently reached out to this nation that Michael Rubin of the Washington Enterprise Institute dubbed the “most pro-American in the entire region, if not the world”, and Thomas Friedman of the New York Times called “the ultimate red state. . .”

These fanatical Mullahs are not going to stop short of nuclear weapons - the question is what will the US or Israel decide to do about it? The "EU-3" really is just running a smokescreen - they are not even dealing with anyone of real authority in Tehran, and it is clearer than ever that the Mullahs will not voluntarily decide to abandon their quest for nuclear weapons.
