WASHINGTON, May 26 - The American military commander at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, said today that investigators had found "no credible evidence" that a Koran had ever been flushed down a toilet there to unsettle detainees, and no serious incidents of intentional mishandling of the Muslim holy book by Americans.
The commander, Brig. Gen. Jay W. Hood of the Army, said 13 possible incidents had been investigated in which the book might have been mishandled: 10 by guards and 3 by interrogators. Of the 13, only 5 embody "what could be broadly defined as mishandling of a Koran," the general said, but declined to provide details.
In several other incidents, he said, guards had accidentally touched the book or touched it "within the scope of their duties." And in two other incidents, both involving interrogations, there was possible inadvertent mishandling, General Hood said.
"We've also identified 15 incidents where detainees mishandled or inappropriately treated the Koran, one of which was the specific example of a detainee who ripped pages out of their own Koran," the general said.
The general's Pentagon briefing was part of an attempt to quell bitter feelings in the Muslim world sparked by reports of mistreatment of the holy book. General Hood said he was confident that the guard force's procedures for handling the book were adequate, but he also said that they were continually reviewed.
As for the detainees, he said, "this is not a benign group of people." He said the prisoners constituted "a clear and present danger" to the United States, and that interrogations continued to provide valuable intelligence.

they continue to lend credibility to these allegations by having investigation after investigation, answering charges, lending credence to the insane idea that a book can't be touched because its some kind of crime against god.
just shutup already about the Koran.
( And : Do Arab and Muslim prisons supply Bibles for Christian and Jewish inmates? Huh? Huh?)
I wish they would do some sort of poll on this subject; I'd give them an earful.
I'm tired of these "news" stories. If they go on much longer, I will buy a copy of the Koran and start using its pages as toilet paper.
Is this intentional? Here's a Koran being burned.
Damned straight it's intentional. Oh, sorry, I guess it's not a problem though. Americans aren't the ones burning it. It must be OK then.
And that is just what we need our generals and leaders to say. This is getting ridiculous that so much attention is being paid to their touchy-feely yammering.
Headlinespeak doesn't do the statement justice. Of course he means the Americans.
That looks awfully Photoshoppy. Where are the charred edges of the paper?
I believe you are seeing it immediately after the lighter fluid that was poured on it was lit, therefore no charring. See the man holding the box of matches in the foreground?
Got another question, isn't Arabic a right-to-left reading language (like Hebrew)? The writing looks fuzzily Arabic, but notice where the line breaks are on the right-hand page. The text is not aligned on the page appropriate to a language like that.
Looks fine to me. All the lines are both right and left justified as Arabis Korans are. The 3rd and 4th lines are indented like a blockquote, either to set off a quote or a heading, again, as is done reoutinely in manuscript Korans. Here are three other examples of a manuscript Koran to compare it to:
You know that on the left-hand page the text is both left and right-justified. You can't see the right-hand side because the photo overexposed the part in sunshine, you can only see the part in the shadow of the man's hand. That bright curvy end-of-text that runs down the middle of the page is an artifact of the sun and shadow, it's not depicting a left-justified only text.
It's hard to make out what's near the spine in the "fire" picture, due to the glare on the paper, but it doesn't look to be center indented.
I mean, on the right. I know the left is more visible in the shade than in the glare.
It's impossible to tell because it's cut off by the glare, but it looks to me just like the second line of this page from a Koran. It even has the page number at the top center, and the chapter name on the top right outside of the box.
It looks a little bit like music notation on magic mushrooms.
