You're only partly right. In order for there to be support for ending such programs, work has to pay enough for the workers to subsist on their own.

The value of the work is what the value of the work is. The market says Job A pays Wage A. If you want to make Wage B, you have to acquire job skills that will entice the owner of Job B to hire you.

What we need is some good old legislation to that effect. That'll solve the problem!

Or they could just get other jobs.

Freedom cuts both ways.

Why do their workers choose to work there when they can make a living wage working for ______?

No, it really doesn't have to pay enough. They get paid what they're worth. End the programs and stop facilitating under-achievers. If they want better pay, then they should go to school, get two jobs, whatever it takes.

Free-enterprise means FREE to engage in lawful commercial activities unhindered by interference from anyone - even if they have do-gooder tendancies and "feel" that an honest day's work deserves some unrealistic expectation of sufficient (a purely subjective term) compensation.
