ST. LOUIS, May 26, 2005 The Boeing ScanEagle UAV is retrieved after a combat flight mission in Iraq. Since August 2004, the Marines have been using the long-endurance UAV to provide real-time imagery and situational awareness. The Mexican drug cartels could use a few of those to shuttle contraband back and forth across the border.

ScanEagle, a long-endurance fully autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) developed by Boeing [NYSE:BA] and The Insitu Group, has surpassed 3,000 combat flight hours during operations in Iraq in just ten months. What does "fully autonomous" mean in this context? Does it mean the machine is given instructions before it launches but is not operated by remote control after the launch?
