LONEGAN FOR GOVERNOR
-- More visits by 9 am than ALL day LAST Tuesday! NEW JERSEY REPUBLICANS FLOCKING TO LONEGAN WEB SITE
ALL OVER NEW JERSEY Visits to www.lonegan.com, Bogota Mayor and GOP Gubernatorial candidate Steve Lonegan's web site are increasing exponentially, the campaign reports. "More people visited our website by 9 am today than ALL of LAST Tuesday," said Lonegan campaign chairman Kenneth Del Vecchio. "Yesterday, we had a record 1,358 visits to our site www.lonegan.com even more than when Steve gained national media coverage last December when he protested the South Orange/Maplewood School District's decision to ban Christmas Carols and Hanukah Songs from their annual concert." As of 10:20 am, 484 people had visited Lonegan's website, versus 388 on all day on Tuesday, May 17. "Conservatives all over New Jersey are switching from Bret Schundler to Steve Lonegan," Del Vecchio said. "He's a conservative and he isn't afraid to say it. His outspoken defense for our values is winning him supporters around the Garden State, just as he won three times in a town both Schundler and Forrester lost, while keeping Republican council control for TEN STRAIGHT ELECTIONS." "Visits to Steve's website are increasing exponentially and this reflects the level of interest in our campaign," Del Vecchio added. "That's because Republicans are looking for a winner in November and Republicans know it isn't either of the two men who failed us before. It's time for a change, time for a conservative change."
Following Schundler's offer, another candidate, Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan, yesterday came up with an offer of his own - $250 to anyone who can identify a mayor "with a better record of controlling spending, reducing debt and keeping taxes below inflation" than Lonegan. "If Doug Forrester's record as a mayor is the worst in New Jersey, then mine is the best," Lonegan said. Forrester, the wealthiest candidate who has spent about $6 million from his personal fortune on the primary campaign, didn't offer to toss cash around, but released a scathing statement on Schundler's record as Jersey City mayor. "Schundler continues to deny the facts of his record," Forrester spokeswoman Sherry Sylvester said. "It is important the voters know the truth." The wrangling came as the Republican gubernatorial campaign increasingly focused on property taxes and the performances of Schundler and Forrester as mayors. Those two candidates remain the perceived front-runners, with the five other candidates, including Lonegan, looking for attention as the June 7 vote nears. Schundler cited statistics that show property taxes "more than tripled" during Forrester's brief tenure on the West Windsor committee and as mayor in the early 1980s. "If anyone watching this can find anybody who more than tripled property taxes in four years, I'll give you $250 because I'd like to have that information," Schundler said. "I would like that, just to know if there's anyone who had a worse record." But Forrester scoffed at Schundler's mayoral record, continuing to focus attention on a payroll tax approved by Schundler and increased property taxes amid increased state aid in Jersey City under Schundler's watch. And then there's Lonegan, who promoted his efforts to freeze spending, cut debt and keep taxes below inflation. "If there is a mayor who has built a better record for taxpayers than I have, I would like to meet that person," Lonegan said. "I'll pay $250 to any person who can find that mayor because I would like to meet him or her and both shake their hand and ask for their support." Morris County Freeholder John Murphy, another candidate, strove to note how he's avoided the fray and focused on his plan to cut the budget and boost property tax rebates. "While Doug Forrester and Bret Schundler wallow in the past, John Murphy is looking toward the future," Murphy campaign manger Rich DeAngelis said. |

Hi Ziva!
I like the website. Nice.
The Q/A section is more complete than the other candidates.
You should have something in the Blog section even if it's sort of a "Steve's Schedule" type of thing.
(If what I just wrote makes you sad or angry,
it is hard enough in nj for a republican to win state wide office, when three, all in all pretty decent candidates (no one is perfect), are slitting each other's throats it becomes impossible
JMHO
you're right.
Someone needs to sit these clowns and teach them the 11th commandment as delivered by St.Ronnie.
Good idea. Done.
Forrester, the wealthiest candidate who has spent about $6 million from his personal fortune on the primary campaign
Astonishingly, he has managed to spend all that money without offering a single good reason why anybody should vote for him. Just goofy catch phrases and dopey cheap swipes at his opponents. Hes worthless.
A primary is a contest with one winner. Schundler and Forrester are going pretty hard against each other in their ads right now. What else can you expect? This is the nature of a contested primary. Both have records to be attacked and defended. If their records are being misrepresented, what do you expect them to do?
Lonegan is showing people, through his record, that he has the experience, leadership, vision, and conservative values demonstrated by action to excite NJ voters in both the primary and the general election.
The 11th commandment is usually invoked (not necessarily by you two, but you are not from NJ) to keep a strong contender from clearly showing how he differs from other candidates. A contrast has to be made, or all candidates will seem alike.
After the primary, that is the time for unity.
Reagan advocated stressing ones Ideas over the others, not calling the other guy deficient. Let the Dems do their own homework........
And Yes, I swim in the Cesspool. (am from NJ.)
Correct. And I believe that the so-called 11th Commandment applies more to personal attacks. In my view, attacks on someone's record, as long as you can back them up with fact, are to be encouraged, if only to force candidates off of their carefully scripted talking points and actually get them to explain their views instead of just packaging sound bytes. Also, if I recall, Ronald Reagan was none too shy about attacking Gerald Ford's record nor any of his Republican opponents during the 1980 primaries. But his approach was always one of "these are decent men with whom I disagree about the correct strategy" rather than the current approach of "this guy is less scummy than me!"
You have a good point. I haven't heard all the Schundler/Forrester attacks. I thought they were disagreeing about how each other's records were being represented. Are they really essentially saying "this guy is less scummy than me?"
Yea Forrester is claiming Schundler is in the real estate developers' pockets.
I agree, the primary focus should be on ideas, and that is how Lonegan's campaign is structured. However, if a candidate has a hidden shortcoming that may be used against him by the Dems in a general election, the primary voters should be made aware of it.
If we don't do good opposition research on the primary candidates, you can be sure the Dems will, and our party will suffer for our reticence.
Let me give you an example. Two years ago, I worked for a Repub. state Senatorial candidate in a primary running against anothe Repub. slate that had a wife-beater on it. It wasn't a secret, all that kind of stuff is already out there. Our slate lost, and sure enough, the Dems used it in the election.
Did we give it to the Dems? Of course not. Anything we know, they will know, and will certainly use more harshly against us. That is why that material has to be brought out in the primary.
Speaking of NJ GOP, anyone that is on here in the Garden State know a Jersey Republican (rising star politically from what I understand) named Rick Malek?
So, how's Rick Shaftan? Or are YOU Mr. Shaftan? You're boy is going to suck just enough votes away from Bret to swing the nomination to Doug. What's he getting in return? Or is it just because he's still mad at Bret? Poor Steve.
Does he have a sister named Melanie who went to UVa.? If so, this is officially WAY too small a world.
He may, its been a while since I seen him (he went to WKU for school) and I remember him having a sister, just didn't remember her name or what school, though UVa sounds right...
Well, Mr. Forrester has been endorsed by moneybags Lewis Eisenberg - you know, Corzine's buddy back in their Goldman-Sachs days.
Eisenberg was once a Democrat and supported - I believe - Fritz Mondale. He also set up a PAC to help "Moderate" (read Liberal) Repubs get elected.
He was Chrissie Whitman's bagman and was, I believe appointed to the New Jersey Sports Authority by that RINO
Donnie "D" DiFrancisco who worked so hard to defeat Schundler when he was nominated.
So I assume you aren't including Forrester in the three.
If I were a New Jersey Resident, I wouldn't vote for him simply because of the Lewis Eisenberg connection.

Conservatives Wary Over GOP Nominee For Finance Chairman
By Jim Burns
CNSNews.com Senior Staff Writer

(2nd Add: Includes additional background on Lewis Eisenberg, finance chairman of the Republican National Committee.)
(CNSNews.com) - Lewis Eisenberg's nomination as Republican Party Finance Chairman has upset many conservatives. He was to be nominated on Friday at the party's annual winter meeting in Austin, Tex.
Ralph Reed, chairman of the Georgia Republican Party, accepted the original request to nominate Eisenberg, but on Thursday he reversed the decision. He said he changed his mind after talking with Republican National Committee members and conservative leaders.
Eisenberg is a prominent New Jersey fundraiser and founder of the pro-choice Republican Leadership Council. Many pro-life Republicans think the RLC wants to purge them from the party by raising money for liberal Republican candidates.
Family Research Council President Ken Connor called Eisenberg's nomination a "slap in the face of pro-life Bush voters."
"Lew Eisenberg has made it his life's work to defeat pro-life candidates and drive the pro-life movement out of the Republican Party. It is simply mind-boggling that GOP leaders would consider for the powerful position of finance chairman someone who contributed to Walter Mondale and not Ronald Reagan," said Connor in a statement.
While Eisenberg has supported Republicans in the recent past, he also admitted he has contributed to the campaigns of Democrats Mondale, House Democratic Leader Dick Gephardt of Missouri; former Colorado Rep. Tim Wirth; Sen. Christopher Dodd of Conn.; former Arizona Gov. Bruce Babbitt; and Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware.
Connor predicts if Eisenberg is confirmed, it will cause a widening split between the GOP's wealthy establishment elite and the conservative rank-and-file.
"Too many of the party elite hold what they see as the 'great unwashed' in poorly concealed contempt. Mr. Eisenberg has made a career out of financing and working for candidates, including many liberal pro-abortion Democrats, who actively oppose the Republican Party's pro-life majority," Connor said.
The Washington Times reported Friday that another conservative RNC member, Michael Retzer of Mississippi, will nominate Eisenberg.
"Lew Eisenberg has an outstanding record of raising money for Republican candidates and the Republican Party," Retzer told the Times.
When asked about the flap over the Eisenberg nomination, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said "the Republican Party is more unified than it has been in a decade and that's a sign of
the great support" that people have given the president.
He said he thinks "there's no question" there are divisions within the party between pro-life and pro-abortion supporters. "But, one thing they all have in common is they support the president and that's the sign of a healthy Republican Party that welcomes different views into the party," Fleischer said.
Eisenberg, recently chaired the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and led that agency through the Sept. 11 tragedy. He was also recently appointed a member of New York's Lower Manhattan Redevelopment Authority, which will spearhead the rebuilding of ground zero.
Amen. But get your people out. Freep me privately if you need more info. Internals have it VERY close. And a sh!t like Lonegan might peel of 5k pro-lifers to cost Bret the nomination. Steve's a bitter creature of a bitter consultant. Vote Bret!
