Gallup Shock: 69 Percent Oppose Dem Filibusters
An overwhelming majority of Americans agree with Republicans who say President Bush's judicial nominees deserve an up or down vote, according to a Gallup survey released yesterday.
The bombshell survey found that 35 percent "want to see the filibuster rules changed so that those judicial nominees are subject to an up-or-down vote," Gallup said. Thirty-four percent "want to see the filibuster rule preserved" but "would like to see the Senate have an up-or-down vote on those nominees."
Only 19 percent told Gallup that Democrats were right to filibuster judicial appointments, with 12 percent voicing no opinion.
Twenty-four hours after the bombshell poll's release, news that 69 percent of Americans want Democrats to stop filibustering Bush's judicial nominees has yet to be reported by a single major U.S. media outlet.
In another stunning development, a plurality of those surveyed by Gallup - 38 percent - said that Christian influence on the courts was "not enough," while only 27 percent disagreed. Twenty-eight percent said Christian influence on the courts was "about right."
The Gallup survey also found that 29 percent of Americans "think Federal court judges are too liberal" - with just 19 percent saying the judiciary is "too conservative."
Which only serves to PROVE that McCain & Co. have betrayed the American People and the Republican Party!!
Of course, it might have been handy if Gallup had released this poll BEFORE the nitwits sold us out!!
Good grief! The MSM will bury this story immediately.
I am tired of polls period. They are nothing but an attempt to control politicians (which they often succeed in doing). We hold periodic elections to choose people for office in order to make decisions for us, and they should be able to do so without undue influence from the media. If elections themselves are not enough to provide the people with sufficient power, then I am in favor of the use of plebiscites to decide major issues. For instance, the social security solution should be put to referendum to decide the type of reform used. This would be a much more fair arrangment than leaving it in the hands of a cowardly Congress.
Polling has varied greatly from one organization to the next and it all rested on the way in which the question was worded. So the Democrats can argue that they are in keeping with the polls as some of them are worded as to suggest that the Republicans are trying to force in their nominees.
This presumes that Americans are stupid. The good news is, when Democrats make this assumption, they get a big surprise later and somehow it's all Karl Rove's fault. :D
For instance, yesterday's USA Today had this story with a different spin:
On the filibuster confrontation - defused by a compromise announced late Monday - those surveyed favored the Democrats by 48%-40%. But they saw merit in the arguments of each side. A 53% majority say the filibuster - the ability of at least 41 senators to continue debate and delay a vote - should be preserved. Still, 69% wanted the Senate to hold up-or-down votes on judicial nominees. [bold mine]
It's amazing what the numbers look like when you ask the questions fairly.
A substantial majority of Americans are paying little attention to the debate over the Senate's filibuster rule, according to the latest CNN/USA Today/Gallup survey. After being informed about the issue, 48% of respondents say they favor the Democrats' side and 40% favor the Republicans' side. However, when the question is posed differently, 35% of respondents favor the position that Republicans are arguing for, while 19% favor the position that Democrats prefer.Clear majorities of respondents say the Republicans and, separately, the Democrats are acting like "spoiled children" rather than "responsible adults." However, a majority believes that at least one party is acting responsibly.
"Now's the time for Bush to appoint some real conservatives to the bench"
I nominate Ann Coulter (yes she is a lawyer) to the 9th circuit.
that's the reason the DemoncRATs ran for cover with the RINOs who themselves are so stupid they merely stick their finger in the wind and do whatever their media suck-ups tell them to.
Hmmmmm... It's enough to make you suspect an agenda at work.
Now they tell us.
Look closely, its Mewsmax, not Newsmax. This is a fraud.
"I nominate Ann Coulter (yes she is a lawyer) to the 9th circuit."
Now that would be funny,
Bet that would get more than 69%
Byrd is just following in a long tradition of Democrat Senators-for-Life from WV. They leave office when they die. But in WV they can still vote if not hold office. Why do you think Jay Rockefeller picked WV to "represent?" A Senator or Congressman from WV has ONE campaign, the first one to get elected. After that, they can mail it in.
****
Yoi, double yoi.............. if they were all well educated it would be 89%! Hmmm ha!
Another reason that every one of these Bush nominees better get an up or down vote. If not, the seven Republicans first and foremost are going to pay for it.
GOP... Gutless Old "Kitty Kats"
(actual pictures of GOP Senator after the compromise)
I find the timing deeply suspicious... /sarcasm
Im not surprised by this. There is a certain degree of common sense in the general public..and a sense of fair play.
Bush has the power to use a little 'righteous anger'...and the bully pulpit...to take his case for nominees receiving an up or down vote directly to the American people, and educate them...as Reagan did...in the process lay waste to the dems and the scoundrels in his own party.
Why he wont get in this fight at this point remains a mystery to me. Judicial reform starting with conservative confirmations (or the lack of them) will be a big part of his long term legacy, along with the WOT. Maybe he is waiting for the SCOTUS nominees to act...
I would set the stage now...for the smackdown cage battles to come.
