LARGE parts of Moscow lost power today after a fire at a substation, causing a crisis that shut the stock exchange, crippled transport and threatened mobile phone links in the sweltering Russian capital.

Energy Minister Viktor Khristenko said the breakdown was caused by a fire and explosion overnight at an electricity substation. There was no evidence of a terrorist attack, he said.
Moscow's main MICEX foreign exchange and share market stopped trading for several hours because, though it had power, many of its clients did not. It reopened later in the afternoon.

The underground (metro) system ground to a halt, leaving more than 20,000 passengers stranded below ground in the capital which is experiencing a heatwave with temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius.

Passengers were evacuated after an hour, metro spokeswoman Svetlana Tsareva said.

"There was a fire and explosion at the Chagino substation," said Khristenko, referring to an area in south-east Moscow. "As a result of the explosion several transformers were destroyed."

He put it down to the age of the Soviet-era substation, built in 1963.

Could happen here, next. Congress has done absolutely nothing to remedy the problems with the electrical distribution system since the big NE blackout of a couple of years ago.

Read last week that sunspot activity was very high, and could disrupt satellites and power grids.

Didn't they ultimately conclude that the blackout was caused by a bird landing in the wrong place on one of the wires?

"Didn't they ultimately conclude that the blackout was caused by a bird landing in the wrong place on one of the wires?" Yeah, but they don't know what kind of bird because it flew away.

"Could happen here, next."

Yes, no, sorta, maybe.

Texas is not linked to any other state. We will not participate in a national blackout.

It was that last swamp cooler someone turned on. The straw. Should go to alternating cooling hours. All last names ending in 'A' take the first 8-hour shift, and all last names ending in 'O' take the next 8-hour period, and all last names ending in 'Z' take the last eight hours.
