Democrats count victory in pact on judicial picks
THE WASHINGTON TIMES ^ | May 25, 2005 | By Stephen Dinan

Democratic leaders claimed victory yesterday over the deal senators cut regarding filibusters of judicial nominees, while most Republicans said it violated their principles and conservative activists vowed retribution. "Our republic stands strong. Our Constitution is solid. Our flag flies over a nation that has reaffirmed its faith in freedom," said Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, while Sens. Edward M. Kennedy, Massachusetts Democrat, and Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi praised the deal for averting a crisis. But while most Democrats crowed, the Congressional Black Caucus sounded a discordant note. "This deal is more of a capitulation than a compromise," said Rep. Melvin Watt, North Carolina Democrat and caucus chairman...

...Most Republicans were just as despondent about the outcome, though they saw a capitulation on the part of the seven Republicans who joined with seven Democrats to strike a deal. Under the terms, the seven Democrats pledged to grant up-or-down votes on three nominees and to use restraint with filibusters in the future in exchange for seven Republicans' pledge to vote against declaring the filibuster of judicial nominees unconstitutional. Sen. Christopher S. Bond, Missouri Republican, called it a "Band-Aid" that simply puts off a showdown, while Sen. George Allen, Virginia Republican, called it "a major disappointment on principle." "Ultimately, nothing has been settled when a vacancy arises on the U.S. Supreme Court," Mr. Allen said. Some of the seven Republicans were hearing from their constituents -- particularly Sen. John W. Warner of Virginia...

...Mr. Allen's office, meanwhile, received 500 calls as of yesterday afternoon, with the majority of the callers opposed to the deal.

Both Sens Lott and Graham (who are in hot water) said on FNC yesterday that a filibuster by the dems will end the agreement. Further blocking by the 7 democrats will end these two sens careers and they know it. McCain on the other hand walks on water.

It would be funny if McCain tried to run for president. Joe Scarborough and a few others said McCain is the big loser. Why? Because they think he is running for president of the USA, not the NYTimes. Well, if this deal works, and the 7 democrats get all Bushes judges through(hard to believe), then McCain deserves our support. If the deal breaks down, or all 7 Republicans sellout any Bush nominees(not likely), then McCain is rightly presidential toast. But he can still stay in the Senate and torture us.

He told Hannity yesterday...that if all of the candidates do not get an up or down vote......

He would seek to use the constitutional option.

He told Hannity several times.....The constitutional option is still on the table.

STILL.....For most....our only reply can be..

....when we actually see it happen...then we will believe it.

AND when, and if, there are enough Republican senators to impose the constitutional option. I won't hold my breath.

It is good to see senate progress on Bolton, Owen, etc. But I thought it would have been MUCH better if the Republicans had been able to avoid the defections and do it now. Let the Dems shut down the Senate. There would have been fewer of them come January 2007. Now the opponent sees weakness and the Republican base is demoralized. this will make it MORE likely that the Republicans will be back in the minority - where apparently many of them are more comfortable, judging from their actions - sooner rather than later.

I know there are arguments on the other side. Maybe they know something peons like me don't. I hope I'm wrong about the deal. But I gotta call it like I see it.

Sad, but probably true.

"exception of 10 Republicans in both Houses of Congress"

I optimistically hope the number is higher than that. In terms of Senators, do you include Chambliss and Allen? Toomey was a good Rep, but he left to head a foundation after his loss to Specter. I think he should have stayed in the House, myself. Any good ones you'd care to mention? I could use some bolstering, about now.

"What they [Dems] lack in policies and principles they make up for in cunning."

Right on. Also serves as a handy, one-sentence description of Communists and (more commonly now) proto-Communists, Hard Left variants.

"It would be funny if McCain tried to run for president."

I honestly think he will ticket with Hillary. I would say "under" Hillary, but I can't quite do that, even to John.

The Republicans really need a spine.

I know it's been said thousands of times.

"The Republicans really need a spine."

I agree. We need to rebuild the party around stronger, more "untouchable" people (see my tagline). Elliot Ness's FBI men were known as "untouchables", not because they couldn't be shot down---that could be done and was. It was becasue they could not be bribed and blackmailed.

The Democratic Party, symbolized by their new real leader, Hillary, has become a part of the Hard Left. To understand the tactics of the Hard Left, which has evolved from Communism and I now call proto-Communism, read Red Horizons, by Ion Pacepa, Inside the Aquarium & other books by Anton Suvorov.

Thanks for book references!

I do wonder about those FBI files also.

Tom Delay is the one that comes to mind.

He takes a steady pounding not only from the communista and socialists but from members of this forum.

There are others that speak up but I can't think of their names right now.

What usually happens to those who stant for us is that when they speak up the Democrats pound them, then the Democrat's propaganda arm, the main stream media attacks them followed by some Republicans and then members of this forum pile on.

The wonder is, not that there so few that speak for us, but seeing the treatment they receive, that there any at all.

You're quite welcome. We on FR need to push the question of the files. Its all a matter of record and the witnesses are FBI agents. Imagine if Bush did something like this. Somehow, we have to get the story out to the American people.

NRO should push it, so should the WSJ, and Hannity. Richard Poe is an FR member, by the way, under his own name.

Delay is a good example. A strong leader, so the Dems want to take him down. They have no ethics, so any tactic goes. I understand and accept that. This is the enemy we face. The MSM is not incompetent. They are, in fact pretty good at their job. People just don't realize that their job is to destroy America.

Like yourself, I am most bugged by the weak Repub response, esp. in the Senate and White House. House of Reps is not as bad. In 2006, we need to especially concentrate on DeWhine and any other Repub who joined the fillibusterbuster who is up for re-election in 2006.

Personally, I will focus on DeWine as I am nearby (Western Pa). We need to form a Western Pennsylvanian Republicans to dump DeWine in 2006 Primary organization.
