The father of a Petaluma teenager appealed to school officials Tuesday night, asking them to permit his son to wear his Marine Corps uniform when he joins his classmates for next month's high school graduation ceremony.
"It's been his dream to become a Marine since I can remember," said James Kiernan, explaining that his son had finished his high school studies early so he could begin military training. "I ask you to allow my son to not only bring honor to himself but also his fellow classmates and his school."
But the Petaluma City School District board chose not to take any action on the request of 17-year-old Steven Kiernan, who is scheduled to complete boot camp at Camp Pendleton next week
School districts in Wisconsin and Illinois decided this year to allow students to wear military uniforms at graduation ceremonies. But a school district in Ogden, Utah, last year withheld the diplomas of two seniors after they pulled off their gowns to reveal Army National Guard uniforms. Marine Corps veteran Eddie Martin, of Petaluma, questioned the school board's wisdom. "Why as a society do we have to make a big deal of everything?" he asked. "This community needs to support people like this. ... This gentleman could die for us next year for our freedoms."

But insulting and punishing graduates who join the military, that's political.
As I said a week ago, I favor a law that says military uniforms are acceptable garb for all situations. (perhaps not operating-room attire, a few exceptions maybe but not for school graduations.)

Because he might not get the attention he so desperately craves. It's all about, "LOOK AT ME". As I have suggested in several threads on this matter, he needs to get back to boot camp and learn something. If he is not mature enough not to wear his uniform out of place, he is not mature enough to have it.
I've seen another article about this or a similar situation. I have a question though, how in the world does he complete boot camp while still attending high school?

I can't imagine a setting where they'd even have to ask persmission to wear military uniform!
It's strange... I live in a pretty blue state. Heck... my town has a hippy college that probably gives us two to three times the normal hippy anarchist lesbian ratio. But we have normal schools that make sense. We also have a lot of military families, maybe that is the difference.
I just shake my head at people who would mock WA for our weird liberal ideas (not that there's anything wrong with that) when stuff like kids wearing a military uniform at graduation would never have been questioned at the school I went to.

I don't know nor can I fine the Petaluma City School District website or one of their members, Lou Steinberg's email. If you know, please forward. I want to let them know that not letting a Marine wear his uniform at graduation is fu%#*^ crazy.

Boy L98Fiero, I so disagree with you. The U S Forces uniform is fit for any venue. Period. Like it or not.
