Yesterday we were within a few hours of a historic vote to allow the U.S. Senate to exercise its constitutional option to confirm judges by majority vote. That vote would have allowed all pending nominees and future Supreme Court nominees to receive an "up or down" vote, and paved the way for President Bush to more effectively restore the judiciary to its proper constitutional role by appointing to the federal bench judges who are not activists.
The votes were there to pass it. But today, in exchange for allowing a few judges to receive full votes, seven Republicans betrayed their colleagues and Majority Leader Frist and sacrificed the principle that the filibuster should not be used to block judicial nominees - a Senate tradition in place for more than 200 years. Remember Justice Clarence Thomas? He was confirmed by a vote of 52-48 while Democrats controlled the Senate, just 14 years ago! Why wasn't he filibustered?
Because to filibuster a judicial nominee was unthinkable to Democrats 14 years ago. This "deal" is a disaster and a sell-out of the "values voters" who believed Republican promises that reigning in an out-of-control judiciary was their top priority. Conservative senators and national leaders are outraged.
If you are disappointed in Sen. McCain's role in facilitating this decision to snatch defeat and compromise from the jaws of victory, please call him at 202-224-2235 or email him at john_ mccain@mccain.senate.gov and let him know how you feel.

I agree and after watching his press conference after that mess was signed and his subsequent interviews on TV, I've come to the conclusion that his entire effort was designed to promote his book and the TV movie. Yes, that's cynical, but if true, it's totally disgusting.
What I was surprised at was her ability to be so comfortable in her own skin. After she became a phenomenon in Crawford, the Republican spin team realized she was a real threat. Cindy Sheehan, made a tremendous personal sacrifice. A sacrifice being made by too many American families who have had loved ones killed or maimed in this war.
Cindy has credibility the Administration does not have. Even the President tried to diminish her by saying that she did not believe in fighting terrorism. His minions, of course, did much worse, trying to make out that she was a media savvy manipulator -- and even spreading false rumors that she was anti-Semitic.
Is this an actual candidate for President of the United States of America???
