Excellent read. Thanks for the ping redrock.

I have been visiting with a man from my old neighborhood lately. He's in his late 80s now. Mind sharp as a tack. I have been learning of his "drop", along with 30 others, into New Ginuea, way back when. He was there for a long time, sometimes going 13 days without seeing another human and when he did he hoped it was an American. Just last weekend he mentioned that he was here to tell about it and many weren't, and then the brief silence followed. The silent salute. These heros are Our National Treasures.

You know, Chocolate Chip Cookies...... have always been my favorite. Unlike the hero in your story, I didn't have a good reason.

Now, I do. Everytime I have one, I will think of you both.

Thank you for this tearfully beautiful story. Extremely well done!

PS... The American Hero in your story reminds me of the heroine in one of my favorite novels....A Town Called Alice.

"....and then the brief silence followed. The silent salute."

I have talked to people who served in WWII....Korea.....Vietnam....and everywhere else in between.

...and everyone that I talked to...does the same.

The 'silent salute'.....and the 'old veterans stare'.

I understand it...since I do the same...but it is amazing and wonderful to see it in every generation.

I think it comes with the uniform.

Yes. Exactly. It's about an English woman taken captive in WWII by the Japanese who lives to fall in love with an Australian pilot. I read it years ago. I love that book. It was made into a film. I never got to see it, but it can be rented on line.

I think I'll dig it up and read it again!

Agreed. I am honored to have this brief opportunity to glimps through our hero's "windows" into Our National Treasure, our American History up close and personal.
