as ridiculous as your theory sounds, who in early 2001 could have predicted Vietnam and Paul O'Neil would be a MAJOR issue in the 2004 election.
I'd say your theory has some plausibility because McCain is extremely cagey and I would not put anything past him, ie becoming a Dem running as an Independant or doing what you say. Very entertaining article.
