A congressman says comedian Bill Maher's comment that the U.S. military has already recruited all the "low-lying fruit" is possibly treasonous and at least grounds to cancel the show.
Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Ala., takes issue with remarks on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher, first aired May 13, in which Maher points out the Army missed its recruiting goal by 42 percent in April.
"More people joined the Michael Jackson fan club," Maher said. "We've done picked all the low-lying Lynndie England fruit, and now we need warm bodies."
Army Reserve Pfc. England was accused of abusing prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.
"I think it borders on treason," Bachus said. "In treason, one definition is to undermine the effort or national security of our country."
In a statement released Monday night, Maher defended his support for the American armed forces.
"Anyone who knows anything about my views and has watched my show knows that I have nothing but the highest regard for the men and women serving this country around the world," Maher said in the statement.
Bachus said he was appalled after watching a rerun of the show shortly after returning from a visit to Germany, in which he met with a paralyzed American soldier in the hospital. He has since written to Time Warner, HBO's parent company.
"I don't want (Maher) prosecuted," Bachus said. "I want him off the air."
Numerous television stations pulled Maher's previous show, "Politically Incorrect," from the air in September 2001 after he argued terrorists weren't cowards when they slammed airplanes into the World Trade Center a week earlier. Maher later apologized.
Hell, I didn't know he was even still on the air.
I dislike Maher too, but based on that quote, well, I don't even know what the hell he means! If that was a joke, it's as funny as tree bark.
I used to respect him for speaking his mind. Now he's just a lying sack of manure.
Maher will do until a real piece of crap comes along.
I NEVER watch this show, but the one time I turned it on I heard the comment in question and promptly turned it off.
Maher is the real piece of crap that came along.
Nobody would give a damn what Bill "Dogboy face" Maher said about anything if he wasn't on TV.
He's on TV because a couple of Hollywood executives like him. A lot of LA producers look and think just like him.
Hell, Maher is the lowest, lying, fruit I can think of!
Bacus is an idiot democrat from Montana.
Bachus - is a republican from Alaska. Worlds apart.
my mistake, sorry
Don Imus has Maher on his radio show all the time mainly because Maher was some studio execs. kid IMus had to coddle when around the studio (in Imus's druggie days). Guess Bill Maher got a litle too close to Imus's cocaine train and the results show.
He's just not funny anymore. Which is about the worst thing
you can say about a comedian.
What a difference an "h" makes.
Alabama, bro.
Treasonous, no. Stupid, and with a total disregard for the brave men and women who would risk their lives defending his right to say it, absolutely.
He means that when you try to recruit people to fight a war, and they have to do it PC-style and not offend Muslime sensibilities, you can only get so many people who will do it on the cheap. Either they should offer a hell of a lot more money, or let our soldiers, sailors and Marines blast the living Shiite out of the next town where the population shelters IED bombers.
I used to like "Politically Incorrect" certainly not because of Maher (he was a smug little sh!t) but because the guests were usually interesting. That was years ago and it sounds like Maher has become much worse. Hopefully HBO will respond like ABC did 4 yrs ago and yank this idiot off the air. I can't imagine his ratings are good anyways.
