LONEGAN FOR GOVERNOR
-- “If Forrester’s record is the worst, then mine is the best!”
LONEGAN COUNTERS SCHUNDLER’S $250 CHALLENGE AGAINST FORRESTER WITH $250 OFFER AGAINST HIS OWN RECORD.
FORT LEE -- Bogota Mayor and GOP gubernatorial candidate Steve Lonegan today offered $250 to anyone who can find a New Jersey Mayor with a better record of controlling spending, reducing debt and keeping taxes below inflation than he has. Lonegan made his comments after being asked by a reporter what he thought of a Schundler challenge that Doug Forrester “had the worst record on taxes of any Mayor in New Jersey.”
“If Doug Forrester’s record as a Mayor is the worst in New Jersey, then mine is the best,” Lonegan said, thanking former Mayor Schundler for bringing this issue to the forefront. “As a Mayor, I froze spending at 1995 levels, cut debt and kept taxes below inflation. That’s why I won three times in a town that both Bret Schundler and Doug Forrester lost and kept GOP council control for ten straight elections. That’s why I am the strongest Republican we can nominate to face Jon Corzine in November.”
“Four of the seven candidates have served as Mayors,” Lonegan said. “And a look at each of our records shows just what kind of government we would bring to New Jersey. John Murphy is a nice guy, but spending, taxes and debt soared both in Morris Township while he served there and in his three terms as Freeholder as well. Under Bret Schundler, spending increased nearly 50 percent while debt went up and municipal taxes and payments in lieu of taxes zoomed up a staggering 37 percent,” Lonegan added.
“And all of us know Bret’s mantra about Doug Forrester: doubled spending, tripled taxes and sextupled debt.”
“If there is a Mayor anywhere in New Jersey who has built a better record for taxpayers than I have, I would like to meet that person,” he said. “I’ll pay $250 to any person who can find that Mayor because I would like to meet him or her and both shake their hand and ask for their support.”
“I will beat Jon Corzine in November and lead Republicans to victory up and down the ballot,” Lonegan added, “by standing up for Republican Principles of lower taxes, home rule and the conservative values most people in this state share. No other candidate can match my record and it’s the one record Corzine can’t attack. That’s why I am the strongest candidate Republicans can nominate to lead our state.”
“New Jersey is ready for a change,” concluded Lonegan, “we’re ready for a conservative change and that change starts with a massive turnout in the June 7th Republican Primary election.”

How is he better than Shundler? I like Bret and all he stands for.
Bret took a dive today on a radio debate. When asked if law enforcement resources should be used against illegal immigration, Bret said (I'm paraphrasing from memory) that law enforcement shouldn't be used in illegal immigration dragnets - which really wasn't the focus of the question.
Bret lost some points to me on that one, as Forrester came out and said LE should be used to enforce illegal immigration law.
Lonegan's the man we need for PRESIDENT!
I supported (and actively campaigned for) Bret in 2001 but he disappointed me in the general campaign and I haven't found anything I dislike about Lonegan
If you like Bret and all he stands for...you will love Lonegan
Lonegan has always been in the forefront of leadership for conservative issues and candidates, unlike Bret who often avoided the conservative label or associations since his last campaign.
Schundler was mayor of Jersey City where WTC '93 and '01 were plotted.
Jersey City, home to:
- A large, multinational Islamic community. Most of which are here illegally with 'paid for' birth certificates. So many, in fact, a birth certificate from Jersey City has been nulled by the Dept. of State. Anyone with a Jersey City birth certificate has to go to Trenton to receive a state issued certificate.
- The Al-Salaam Mosque
- Ahmed Amin Refai
- Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman
- Ramzi Yousef's Apartment
- Ramzi Yousef's storage facility that was converted into a bomb making factory
I think Schundler should address this.
tidbit at post 7
Thank you!
Oh ... I didn't know that.
Yes, that needs to be addressed. While I don't hold Bret directly responsible he needs to state how this could NOT happen again.
>>>Yes, that needs to be addressed. While I don't hold Bret directly responsible he needs to state how this could NOT happen again.
I agree 100%!!!
Yes, I don't know who was directly responsible.
But he was mayor during all of this.
He NEEDS to address this. He wants to be responsible for our state.
AND he did take money from groups involved. He may not have known that at the time...but it doesn't leave me with warm fuzzies what so ever.
Bump to you!
I had the pleasure of meeting all of the candidates at a meet and great brekafast that we (Sparta Republicans Club) held and I have to say that Lonegan imporessed me the most. If you are a conservative there is no other choice but Lonegan. Anyone in doubt over this man needs to visit his website where he clearly and precisely lays out where he stands on every issue. This is more then I an say for any other candidate.
Vote 4 Lonegan!
Interesting.
You live in strange territory.
I'm leaning heavily toward voting for Lonegan.
How's he doing poll-wise compared to the others?
I'm of the belief that in a primary, you -must- vote your conscience... "throwing your vote away" because they can't win is not a valid reason to vote for a squish, because the Party itself will look at the numbers in deciding whether to move right or left. I'll vote for him regardless of the answer to this question... but I'd still like to know if I won't be doing anything more than sending a message.
Qwinn
I sure do.
