Leaving the left
I can no longer abide the simpering voices of self-styled progressives -- people who once championed solidarity
Nightfall, Jan. 30. Eight-million Iraqi voters have finished risking their lives to endorse freedom and defy fascism. Three things happen in rapid succession. The right cheers. The left demurs. I walk away from a long-term intimate relationship. I'm separating not from a person but a cause: the political philosophy that for more than three decades has shaped my character and consciousness, my sense of self and community, even my sense of cosmos.
I'm leaving the left -- more precisely, the American cultural left and what it has become during our time together.
I choose this day for my departure because I can no longer abide the simpering voices of self-styled progressives -- people who once championed solidarity with oppressed populations everywhere -- reciting all the ways Iraq's democratic experiment might yet implode.

For the same reason the fablelist had a child identify the naked emperor as having no clothes while the "adults" were cowardly in their enabling!
Idiots. There is one ethnic Latin group, Cubans, whom the Dems are not fond of. Cubans, having escaped communism, generally vote in a bloc against anything leftist, which includes Democrats.
But my feeling is that other Latinos will not necessarily remain in the Democratic camp. I think most may not have come here to find leftism.
The notable thing about the Left is not that they celebrate ethnicity, but that, as you point out, they only celebrate certain ethnicities, and even villify others, such as white males, or blacks who advocate individual liberty. Ironic that "liberals" have finally come to be the ones who advocate racial preferences. Logical, though. Ironic also that the folks who have made the word "diversity" holy are the same folks who would coerce everyone into some state decreed version of "equality."
Interesting to me that you call yourself "anti-liberal," on my very first post to FR, I described myself as an anti leftist.
That's OK - that happens all the time.
I thought about the keying possibilities, but decided to go with it anyway. I've gotten a lot of thumbs-up, and I refuse to lie down for the Left. It's still on there.
OK, I'll check it out. I like Mr. Thompson.
I'm unfortunate to currently be living in an enclave of liberal/lefties, and there were reports of windows sporting pro-Bush sentiments being smashed in during the election.
These lefties tend to be very hostile. The only way I'd feel safe with openly expressing my own, personal opinions is if I could surround myself with other like-minded guys or with a concealed carry. Trust me.
"Great minds..." the anti-leberal is meant to be a parody of the phrase 'the anti-christ'.
Are you aware that Antonio Villaraigosa is on record as opposing Arnold's position of increasing border security? Did he take an oath to uphold the laws of the state? Does he even know what they are? /rhetoric>
Well, there are definitely absolutes. Of course they exist relative to each other ;-)
Just kidding...our Constitution is an example of an absolute that the Left would like to be rid of.
At the risk of making a comment on a subject of which I am ignorant, I'm going to say, from reading your post, that post modernism must be derived to some degree from socialism, which, while it has a few absolutes of its own, necessarily applies authority arbitrarily and differently from person to person and case to case in its need to create egalitarianism. It cannot see the Constitution as absolute because of this. The fact is that socialism's absolutes, of which egalitarianism is one, require that the whole mechanism not be absolute.
Beyond that, socialism, is based, as you say, on man's ability to reason (rationalism) and create a utopia from the top down. Unfortunately, doing this may be in the power of God, but not man, it seems.
Thank you for the links, will read them when I get a minute, I need to learn that stuff.
No, I wasn't aware of that...he wants unlimited immigration from Mexico? Where is he going with that?
I admit to having been strictly serious with my label anti liberal, rather than using it as parody.
Ugh. That's terrible. So much for free speech, eh?
No, wait. Sounds like intimidation.
I live on the edge of the Bay Area ... according to one of the KSFO hosts, Flyover Country starts at the eastern edge of the town next to me. Are you in the Bay Area as well, or a different Leftist Hive?
Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm quite serious with my label, I just used the 'anti-Christ' phrase for inspiration. I am the anti-liberal!
Stinking Freeper Troll (off DU mode)
A different hive of scum and thievery- Ashland, Ore.
And yes, intimidation, exactly.
I don't understand how liberals can talk of free speech while simultaneously throwing pies at conservative speakers. Their hypocrisy is astounding.
Don't you ever feel overwhelmed by the whole gay pride thing down there? I would find it very difficult to restrain myself from taking a page from the Islamic terrorist's handbook and using it against them.
There is still hope for some Liberals. Great article.
Thanks for the ping.

Badges? I don't got to show you no stinkin' badges.
bttt
Aahhh, Ashland. Yes. I understand now.
All the leftist in-your-faceness blends together. I liked driving through Berkeley playing the local country station, but it's been taken over by some bizarre format mix of Aerosmith and Kiki Dee.
That's absolutely right - the Force is strong in this one. :-)
These people seriously need to buy a clue.
I simply HAD to have a transcript or I would whine and carry on like a liberal.
Voila! I found the article posted in a flash like magic. I bet I wasn't the only one who appreciated your posting it.
Thanks for your usual outstanding freeper work ethic and instincts. You're terrific!
