That last time the earth's temperature dropped - the Little Ice Age from the late medieval period - it and the plague which it had a hand in causing killed about a third of the population of Asia and Europe.
In the last hundred years or so we have recovered. Though it is arguable we have not fully recovered yet.
The point here being the environuts were more right in the 70s when they worried about an environmental disaster due to global cooling then they are now when they now claim we are all going to die from global warming.
