As a group of residents cheered, a Glen Park man tackled Gary Patrolman Carl Cochran, choking the officer and threatening to kill him in an unprovoked attack Wednesday night, Lt. Roger Smith said.
Cochran, a five-year veteran and member of the departments elite S.W.A.T. team, suffered cuts to his face and injuries to his arm and back as a result of the protracted struggle with Kelvin D. Banks, 40.
Cmdr. Jerome Krebes said Thursday he ordered additional patrols in the area in response to the incident.
A small group of people ten or less surrounded the officer during the struggle as Banks wrestled with the officer and tried to grab Cochrans gun.
Cochran grabbed his wrist to stop him while Banks kept one hand on his throat and Banks said, 'I could kill you right now if I wanted to! . . . Cochran reported he could not reach his portable radio, the police report states.
Banks was charged Thursday in Lake Superior Court in Crown Point with battery, resisting law enforcement, intimidation and disorderly conduct and faces up to three years in prison if convicted of the charges, Diane Poulton, spokeswoman for Prosecutor Bernard Carter, said.
Patrolman Richard Knight arrived at 5000 Washington St. to assist Cochran at a domestic dispute and saw his partner struggling with Banks.
Both men were on the ground and a group of residents were crowded around urging Banks to keep up the attack, Smith said. Eventually, Knight and Cochran subdued Banks, who continued to defy officers after he was handcuffed and being led to the squad car, police said

We need to sunder the nation into the liberal one and the heartland. Gary, Indiana could become part of the Great Lakes Urban Archipelago, which would include Detroit, Chicago, Toledo, Cleveland, Buffalo, Duluth, Rochester, Erie, and a few others.
Sometimes I wonder if we divided the country into conservative and liberal what each side would look like.
Gary is one place that you absolute don't want to find yourself in.
ROFL!
Are you SURE you want to start that here?
The Usual Suspects will take it a an opportunity to decry anything that isn't white and Christian.
"The bystanders should be charged with inciting to riot."
We aren't given enough information for you to make this charge. This cop may have had a reputation for being a real jerk and the people were sick of him. I don't know and neither do you.
Well it'd be their denial. They say they aren't down with western civilization or christianity so they have half of the country to do whatever they want. Let's see how the white and black liberals figure out that.
OK. Since I don't know Gary, I have to ask. Was this black residents on a white cop?
"Gary ... scum of the earth."
I was once offered an assignment to a Naval Reserve Unit in Gary. I was interested, until I read up on the city. *Shudder*
What's with domestic violence calls?
It would take about six months for the liberal regions to start begging the conservative regions for foreign aide.
The U.N. would then expound how stingy the conservative region is with their money.
And we would have to put up with statistics showing that the liberal region is 50%-60% HIV positive -- and its all the conservative regions fault for not sending enough condoms.
Encouraging assault on a police officer is reasonably construed as inciting to riot, it seems to me. If the D.A. doesn't charge, that's a political decision; if the D.A. charges and the jury acquits, that's the justice system.
yup.
Sad, but probably true.
My guess is the perp was a large, confident fighter. Shrinking violets don't usually tackle the police.
Cops are good at ground fighting and submission holds, but a serious brawler with a size advantage is a formidable adversary.
I remember doing some overnight work at a Indiana Bell building in Gary in the eighties. All the building people carried a sidearm. They even told us to park our vehicles by the front door where the working street lights were.
The real estate bubble has not reached Gary yet.
I used to live on a street with a lot of cops.
(I baby-sat for all of their kids! LOL!)
Those guys told me that the ABSOLUTE most dangerous call to answer is the Domestic Violence ones.
Yea, in Winter the residents steal the wood of the downtown windows to make fires and stay warm. LOL
Not a certainty--but more likely than not.
