Actually it was our response for demonstrations and protests at the AF gates during the 70's and 80's....never saw too many protests at the gates in the 90's. It "was" a standard operating procedure aka SOP for the Security Police Riot Controls. They still used stomp and drag with a 36 inch riot baton last I can remember. When I first went in I was a puppy pusher K9, before I retrained into EOD. We used bayonets on the ends of M16's that had been modified with a small metal stop between the grip and receiver to preclude the use of it full auto feature. Trouble with bayonets was that back row of bad guys didn't care what happened to front row of bad guys and would shove them onto the point of our bayonets.
The thing I didn't like was the short bayonets that would only hold two protesters at once...dang it !........:o)
The dye was used......saw it , did it , laughed my ass off.

LOL! Short bayonettes only held two punks simultaneously. LOL.
I remain impressed (awed really) by the dye tactic. It must be the PC element that prohibits its use. It's too darn effective otherwise.
