Deep-blue New York could become a red state in the 2008 presidential election, a new poll reveals.
The state voted for President Bush over Sen. John Kerry in the 2004 election, 58 percent to 41 percent. But if the 2008 election were held today, New Yorkers said they would vote for former New York City Republican Mayor Rudy Giuliani over Kerry, 49 percent to 42 percent, with the rest uncertain, according to the Fox News Poll. Giuliani also had a 2-percentage-point edge over the states own Democratic senator, Hillary Clinton.
Even Sen. John McCain beat out Sen. Clinton in the poll, 42 percent to 41 percent, with 17 percent undecided.
But when pollsters asked about the 2006 race for Clintons senate seat, New Yorkers chose Clinton over Giuliani, 53 percent to 43 percent.
Clinton had a sizeable edge over New York Gov. George Pataki (59-36) and Jeanine Pirro and Edward Cox, two relative unknowns who nevertheless got about 25 percent of the votes in the poll conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc.
"New Yorkers have become very comfortable with Mrs. Clinton as their senator, and she will be very difficult to beat in a re-election race, said Brad Coker, managing director of Mason-Dixon.
"A race for the presidency, however, is a completely different ballgame and even among her supportive constituents in New York there are some who are not sure she is right for that job. Among the polls other findings:
* 65 percent believe that if Clinton runs for re-election to the senate, she should also announce her intention to run for president in 2008.
* 54 percent said Giuliani could be more trusted to handle terrorism, compared to 30 percent for Clinton.
* Those polled view Giuliani as "more likeable and "tougher than Clinton.
* 30 percent of New Yorkers think Clinton is "too liberal.
Which means that 70% of New Yorkers are totally clueless.
Turning red or sick of the witch?
Guilani and McCain are not conservatives. That's why NY'ers would vote for them.
That's interesting. Ass backwards and false, but interesting nonetheless.
"The state voted for President Bush over Sen. John Kerry in the 2004 election, 58 percent to 41 percent."
Errr...Reverse those stats there Carl baby.
Exactly, this poll only proves the state is as liberal as ever.
It's a mistake libtard.
Whereas Guiliani would do a good job as president, IMHO McCain would not be a good president. Putting aside whether he's a maverick republican or even a liberal, I base this on his comments during both the Afghan and Iraq wars. In both cases he panicked after a very short time and said we had to send in more troops. In both cases he was quite wrong and proven so within a few weeks.
MajorCombatOperations signed up just today to win friends and influence people. Since the DU dump occurred, MajorCombatOperations has no place to go, so here he is.
Aren't we lucky that he has joined our group to help further the cause of conservatism?
That kind of "mistake" shows their editing staff to be woefully inadequate, and demonstrates why Newsmax is not a reliable news source.
As someone who's lived here my entire life I'm the first to know this state, except for an occasional aberration will always vote for the liberals. McCain probably would win NY and the whole Northeast, and maybe Arizona. Fortunately that won't be enough for the Manchurian Candidate to win the presidency.
I emailed Carl about this error, but either he's not proofread the article or hasn't read his email.
Big mistake to make an error that big.
My vote in 2008 is for Tancredo but if the only choice is between Giuliani or McCain I'd take Giuliani in a heartbeat.
That's what the editor is paid bucks for.
