TORONTO -- Canada's most dramatic confidence vote in decades loomed Thursday, one that will either defeat Prime Minister Paul Martin's minority government or allow him to implement his widely popular federal budget.
Martin called for the vote on his budget to deal with a weeks-long paralysis in the House of Commons, where the opposition Conservative Party has obstructed business by making repeated motions to adjourn and demands that Martin resign.
The vote will stand as a test of confidence in Martin's 11-month government. If the budget fails, Martin has said he will dissolve Parliament, triggering general elections, likely in June.
Martin's chances of remaining in power appeared grim before this week, with the opposition Conservatives capitalizing on a money laundering scandal within his Liberal Party.
But Conservative lawmaker Belinda Stronach stunned Parliament Hill by crossing over to the Liberals on Tuesday and pledging to help them pass the federal budget when it comes up for Thursday's vote.
The Liberals and their allies now appear to have 152 seats in the 308-member House of Commons who will vote in favor of the budget. Conservatives, who have allied with the French-separatist Bloc Quebecois, also appear to have 152 who will vote against the budget. The votes of three independents have become crucial. In the event of a tie, Speaker Peter Milliken would by tradition support the status quo and vote with the government.

Written by a liberal, I see.
At SFgate, could you imagine anything else ? ;-)
It would be funny if Belinda Stronach had to face the voters so soon after betraying her party -- not that I didn't see it coming.
BELINDA BACKFIRE: Conservatives 38%, Liberal 29%

Lovely. Incendiary though your statement is. Trouble is would be the wicked waste of female availability. You see, willowy blondes are in evidence as Liberals. An increase of one to boot. They are usually given a position and spend OUR TAX DOLLARS to their own popularity.
Now there are OTHER women. Shrill voiced and like sneaky little school girls, they butter up Paul Martin and assorted Liberal males. Usually on the down side of feminine charm. One is the Deputy Prime Minister. Trust the Liberals. No challenge she. Oh quick, drop the bloomin' bomb.(I trust my remarks will be taken in the spirit intended-I would not hurt a fly).
Seriously, if the Liberals have not bought at least three Bloc and maybe two more Conservatives- I would be surprised. Ah, poor Canada.
So do you live in Michigan or Toronto...
Most of us from BC who don't kiss Gordon Campbells arse would enjoy the crater...
Neither. Greetings from the "Twin Saults" - Sault Ste Marie, Ontario/Michigan. Rough around the edges, Industrial city with a Heart of gold. (Shouts from the back of the hall- quit being a booster).
Michigan neigbours a red county- ah loyalist to the core- well partly. Cheers- where is your bailiwick?.
Oh, read your profile. Great choice on your decision. Made mine and came from London,England.
I'm actually a dual citizen..mom's from Stoke, dad's from London...
