Was the story accompanied by a picture of Frist doing the backstroke? With McCain coaching? And Reid cheering?
To: carenot
Agreed. And I'll go further. If they are going to cave because of what's in the files, they need to get out and let another Republican run in their place.

It is simply foolishness for you to hold good republicans accountable because of liberals in the NE who elect RHINO's into office (there is nothing GWB or Frist can do about that in the immediate!). Please save the lecture ..
I have NEVER EVER said I wanted to punish Bush or Frist
Just the RINO's who ALWAYS stab the President in the back time and time again
I am sick of it .. no more!

Yet another Democratic offer being portrayed as a done deal. I am amazed how many FReepers fall for this garbage.
I'm beginning to believe that the
endless deal is a new stalling tactic.

Well unless you live in a State where a RHINO is (and you can try and get him beat in the primary) there is nothing more you can do....other than in 06 to make sure you get out and vote Republican.
Otherwise you are hurting GWB (and making his job that much tougher by having to deal with more Dem's in the House and Senate).

I'd rather be allied with a RINO who wants to help me win than a perpetually indignant and unsatisfiable conservative. What do you win?

If the deal involves Harry Reid being whipped naked in Times Square, I'll consider it.

In war you use whatever weapon is available to you.
They used this weapon effectively in the past and we will use it effectively in the present. This isn't a game, its real. This is a real war we are fighting against the collectivists (socialists, marxists, etc, etc...). Right now we are fighting this war via elections and committee rules, if those fail it will become a more "conventional" type war. Where do you choose to win it? in the senate chambers? or on the bloody streets and fields of America?
In a game you can decide to only do things that wont offend your sensibilities. In war you do whatever it takes to win, because losing means that whatever principles kept you from doing what needed to be done, will be laid waste anyway. If you win you can work on spreading your deeply held values and principles. losing this war means slavery to the collective and everything you value.
The choice here is obvious...
Do whatever it takes to get the bloodless win.

Good for those Senators that will not budge on an up and down vote and Good for Frist!!
As to the rest of the RINO's, we have your number.
Oh, and to those trying to tell us we shoud stand down and sacrifice the lives and reputations of these Justices and weaken the president's constitutional authority at behest of RINO's and Dems? Why don't YOU go talk to those people personally and tell them why they must be sacrificed for the 'greater good'. Do you have the courage to look them in the eye and give them that line? I doubt it.
Any Republican or Democrat in a red state WILL be targeted for defeat if they don't allow an up or down vote, or make a backroom deal to defeat them on the floor.
This is it. This is our stand. We will not retreat.

You said..."Tax cuts, for one."
You set your goals way too low IMHO.
How about real tax reform...to make business more competitive...and the US a magnet for high tech industry?
How about upholding the constitution and the sovereignty of the United States?
How about getting judges on the federal courts who will interpret the law according to the constitution...not make it up out of whole cloth to satisfy an agenda?
How about advancing a conservative agenda?
Silly me...I forgot to be PRACTICAL.

If you love your Republican Party - give them TOUGH LOVE.
There is still time before the 2008 election, and if the Republican Party doesn't straighten up it's act, many voters will vote THIRD PARTY, and while you might think it's foolish, that's what many will do.
Then somebody like Hillary is president.
There's still plenty of time before 2008 to send the Republican Party a message by not giving them what they respect - MONEY, not us.
You can still contribute to individual pro-life, conservative Republican candidates, just don't give to the party, IMO.
What the Republican Party needs is TOUGH LOVE right now, or it just might fail.

Please don't take this the wrong way...but if this were the Dems threatening to go nuclear, how do you think our side would react? We would point out that during the height of their powers (what mid to late 1960's -- when they had a battering ram for all of LBJ's whims) they changed the rules on the filibuster to only require 60, instead of 67. So our guys couldn't filibuster the Great Society crap.
I am on the side of the Constitution. I'm not a Republican, nor a Democrat, although I have been both at various stages of my life. To answer your question, my response would be exactly the same.
I do believe you're sincere, and I'm certain you're not just trying to provoke an argument. I simply think you don't understand that there are much bigger issues at stake here than which political party temporarily comes out on top. I also fully understand that we can't return immmediately to a perfectly scrupulous adherence to the Constitution, but we need to begin that journey without delay, and this issue is the best opportunity we've had in decades.

This fight is about the Supreme Court battle that is coming soon. If the deal was to get an up or down on the 7 that are being fillibustered in exchange for not doing the "nuke option" -- that's fine by me. The Dems don't need a deal for that. They merely need to cease the filibuster, thus removing the chance for the rule change to be tried. No Point of Order, no Ruling from the Chair, no vote on the rule change.
Which would return it to status quo ante. Back to square one when they try to filibuster the President's SCOTUS picks.

Nonsense! I know exactly what I heard him say. He may well have been wrong...and I agree that he did not repeat it...but he did say that a deal had been reached.
