Md. cardinal to boycott Giuliani speech
5/18/2005, 11:11 p.m. ET

BALTIMORE (AP) — Cardinal William Keeler will not attend a Jesuit university commencement because keynote speaker Rudolph Giuliani, a Catholic, supports abortion rights, an official said Wednesday.

Giuliani, the Republican former New York City mayor mentioned as a possible candidate for president in 2008, is expected to award some 1,600 degrees and certificates at Friday's commencement at Loyola College of Maryland.

He also is to receive an honorary degree.

Friday's graduating class entered the school one week before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, said Loyola spokesman Mark Kelly.

"The attacks had a huge effect on this class, many of whom are from New York," Kelly said late Wednesday. "The college selected Mayor Giuliani because of his courage and leadership after the attacks."

Kelly added Loyola does not agree with every position held by every speaker.

Keeler could not be reached for comment Wednesday night. His spokesman did not elaborate on the decision, but confirmed it was because of Giuliani's abortion stance.

The Cardinal Newman Society is planning protests, the group said in a statement.

The society is protesting speakers and honorees at 18 Catholic college and universities, saying the invitations violate the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops statement last year asserting "Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles."

Earlier this week, New York Rep. Sherwood Boehlert, also a Catholic, canceled his speech to graduates of St. Elizabeth's College of Nursing after learning a bishop opposed his appearance. Boehlert said he did not want to draw attention from the graduation ceremony.

A spokeswoman for Giuliani did not immediately return phone calls.

Prayers for your speedy recovery in prosperity, counselor.

I love your sense of sympathy...it's as though you're saying "come on in, the water's fine."

Or, more like "come on out, the water sucks."

Could be that Keeler has contracted a terminal cancer and is trying to make up for his career. 78 posted on 05/19/2005 2:45:59 AM EDT by BlackElk

Did you attend any Jesuit schools? Your biting black humor is almost more wicked than mine.

Ah, the Irish satirical sarcasm tradition... Well done, lads!

People do tend to try to make up for lost time or youthful errors when they sense their time is running out. Basic human psychology of guilt and dying. Kubler-Ross 101.

I am, of course, flattered to be compared to Askel5.

You assume correctly. Why on earth would I wish you physical harm? I simply thought you might be more comfortable posting your antiCatholic stuff at Infidels.com or some such. I mean, you are clearly not SSPX or something equivalent like Kumbaya, Inc., in which case I might be angry at the pretense that they call themselves Catholic but would not wish physical harm even to them.

I personally like Torie. He's not specifically anti-Catholic like some of the Prots here. He's a self described, near athiest, and I pray for him.

Black Elk's humor is unsurpassed on this forum. I am always entertained while I learn from him.

Ummmm, The College Preparatory School of St. Robert Bellarmine at Fairfield, Connecticut, so long ago that even the Jebbies were still Catholic. And you?

Kubler-Ross? I died by drowning when I was four. He sent me back and no one has noticed that first death except Him and me.

Or we can teach you to left click and scan across a name, "copy" and "paste" it. I'll give it some thought. Me thinks "Buddy Holly" more likely than "Sinatra."

"That'll Be the Day" comes to mind with this latest Keeler transformation. Not since Clark Kent first dashed into a telephone booth have we seen such an amazing transformation.

"HowlinglyMind-BendingAbsurdity" is still ontologically the only category that quite grasps the utter madness and absurdity of the times and the culture, doing it the philological and satirical justice that it deserves.

Anyone know whether the current acting president of that college is even "Catholic"? I believe a majority of the faculty is comprised of non-Catholics.

Since the passage of the Federal Access to (Abortion Mill) "Clinic" Entrances act, I fear it is the latter. I am still grappling with the question of whether there is life after Rescue Law. I am determined to prove that there is. We have a little K-12 school (horridly underfunded but money is only money and, if I ever find myself involved in anything vaguely well-funded, I promise to doublecheck my purposes and assumptions) in which to educate, raise, train and prepare militantly retro-Catholic revolutionaries against the World, the Flesh and You Know Whom and Slick, Hillary, Chuckie Schumer and Godfried Cardinal Daneels too.

Oh, and that WAS sympathy and empathy and all that. I was envisioning maybe that the good Lottery Fairy would alight in your office and give you the sole Powerball winning ticket, anonymity (payable to the Petro Trust) and the good health and youth and good fortune to enjoy it for so many years as to confound your every enemy and ours. In that circumstance, you can practice or you can recover as you see fit. If you practice, it will be like a cherished hobby.

Personally, I would prefer the cracked crab on ice and the tropical breezes and a copious supply of non-adult beverages (for me but others may quaff the adult stuff in good behavior). I will teach the post-graduate courses in, ummmm, societal reform through applied theology (Arrogant Bustard will handle the applied engineering by putting the torque in the Torquemada, as is traditional) on our very own white sand beaches in the Bahamas or wherever and teach them to budding generations of brilliant and resourceful Catholic commandos. TTGC, its Ladies' Auxiliary, the Party of the Right of the Yale Political Union (no, I did NOT go to Yale but I was elected to membership on the merits) and their respective reliable offspring are always welcome.

Merely "non-Catholic?????" My, what a probably charitable term for them compared with the ecclesiobarbarism that they probably represent! University motto: Non serviam, nunc et semper!

Alas, your last sentence is probably correct. I will put my hooves in training so that I may type your screenname fluidly as is.

You mean the ones who are actually dues-paying members of anti-Catholic secret societies, liberal secular humanist anti-Christian pressure groups, and heinously iniquitous and eldritch neo-gothic creepy pro-abortion organizations? Hold on...I have the link somewhere. It will take me a minute to do the arithmetic.
